ANNASCAUL GAA

SENIORS: Annascaul 0-6 John Mitchel’s 1-11

John Mitchel’s advanced to the second round of the Intermediate championship after a comprehensive win over Annascaul back in West Kerry. Annascaul, playing with the aid of a breeze in the first half, started brightly. Jason Hickson led the way, kicking three huge points in the opening fifteen minutes. The visitors held their composure to claw their way back into the game, with Alan O Donoghue and Niall Sheehy prominent. Despite missing a number of chances, Mitchel’s took the lead through points from Sheehy, Wayne Conway and Shaun Maloney. While they battled bravely in the first half, Annascaul failed to find a way past a tenacious Mitchel’s defence, with Brendan O Mahoney sweeping everything that came his way. With referee Peter Lyons’ whistle, Annascaul trailed at half time, 0-3 to 0-5. After the break, Mitchel’s took up where they left off and popped over two early points. But, the home team didn’t lie down. James Crean and Kenneth Quirke, who was the Annascaul’s best performer on the day, kicked two excellent efforts in the space of two minutes. However, from the next kickout, Mitchel’s long ball worked to good effect, putting the Annascaul rear-guard under pressure and resulting in the concession of a penalty. Wayne Conway slotted it, and it was effectively game over from that point on. Emmet Kennedy, Genie Farrell and Jason Hickson worked hard for the home side, but with a rampant Alan O Donoghue and Niall Sheehy, Mitchel’s sailed home.

We play Ardfert in the County league this coming weekend in Annascaul. Time to be confirmed.

Playing with the aid of a breeze, we took our time getting into the game, and scores were at a minimum in the opening quarter. Aidan and James Crean were excelling with the direct ball into our full forward line, with both getting on the score sheet. Currow refused to lie down however, and they kept in contact with scores of their own, despite the best efforts of Gareth O Donnell and David Clifford in the full back line. Long, high ball was used to good effect soon after, as Aidan Crean used his strength well to score two excellent goals in the space of five minutes. Knowing the wind was a major asset, we used it to good advantage to lead well at half time, 2-7 to 0-4. The second half was all Currow though, and they clawed their way back into the game and were only down a point with ten minutes remaining. Without a score in the second half at that stage, we were under extreme pressure, added to by Emmet Kennedy’s second yellow card. Still, we increased our work rate to compensate for the sending off and held out for a one point win. Best for us were Jason Hickson, Aidan and James Crean, and Shane Foley. TEAM: Tommy Pierce, David Clifford, Gareth O Donnell, James Scanlon, Colm Barry, Kenneth Quirke, Eamonn Hickson (0-2), Emmet Kennedy, Jason Hickson (0-1), Shane Foley, Michael Driscoll, James Crean (0-2), Aidan Crean, (2-4), Genie Farrell. SUBS USED: Keith Moynihan, Declan Lindsey.

We are playing John Mitchels on Saturday in the Intermediate Championship in Annascaul. Time to be confirmed. All support is greatly welcomed.

SENIORS: We lost out to Lispole over the weekend in our final West Kerry league game on a scoreline of 1-20 to 2-9. We started well, with Jonathon Deane finding the net to give us an early lead. Winning the breaking ball in the middle, we led by four points at the quarter way mark. Unfortunately, Lispole upped their work rate, cutting the supply of ball to our main scorers, Aidan Crean and Jonathon Deane. Despite David Clifford and Ger Farrelly’s best defending, we were down at half time by six points. The second half provided little respite for us, as Lispole found the net within minutes to give us a mountain to climb. And again despit of Emmet and Genie’s efforts,  we never got close enough to threaten Lispole after that. Best for us were Kenneth Quirke, Emmet Kennedy, Genie Farrell and Jonathon Deane. ANNASCAUL GAA

SENIORS: We took part in the Paidi O Sé tournament with mixed results. Playing Cooley Kickhams from Louth on Saturday morning, we got off to great start, winning the quarter final with ease. Hours later, we were in Blennerville playing Achill from County Mayo, and pulled through after a very tough encounter. Unfortunately, we picked up a number of injuries over the first two games, which meant we had a weakened team on Sunday in the final. Playing against St. Pats, we began well and were unlucky to trail at the break by four points. As the game wore on, fatigue caught up with us and St. Pats ran out comfortable winners. Regardless of the final result, we benefitted greatly from the tournament over the weekend, with every member of our panel getting considerable game time. Best for us over the weekend were Genie, Ger Farrelly, Gareth O Donnell, James Scanlon and Declan Lindsey. Annascaul GAA would like to thank the organisers of the tournament for the invitation, we were delighted to play our part in honouring Paidi’s memory.

OBITUARY

The tragic death on Thursday last of Vincent Wyles, Aughacasla has plunged the entire area into deep shock and sadness. Vincent was a singer and musician with the “Castle Ramblers”  a new local young and upcoming band, he was a born entertainer taking part in Camp Youth Club Drama productions and even in the last few weeks he took part in the Charity fundraising Mock Wedding in Castle. Vincent is a huge loss to his family, his partner Amy and little son Colm Paul, his mother Breda and sisters Lisa and Anne Marie. He will be sadly missed by his Uncles, Aunts and all his extended family,  his many many friends and the community of Castlegregory and beyond where he was known and loved and where he made a real difference during his all too short life of 25 years on this earth. Sympathy is extended to all the family.  Go ndéana Dia trócaire ar a anam dilís.

The death of Catherine “Ciss”  O Donnell,  nee Dowd, London and late of Goulane, Castlegregory occurred in Wimbledon recently.  Catherine’s husband, the late Jimmy “Sand” O Donnell was a native of Slieve Camp and  they both visited regularly down through the years.  Catherine reached the great old age of 97 years.  She was laid to rest in London following Requiem Mass in St. Winifreds Church, Wimbledon.   Sympathy is extended to her daughters Margaret and Bernie and her son John.

60 YEARS YOUNG

Congratulations to Dai Williams who celebrated his 60th. in Ashes Pub on Friday night. The gentle Welshman had his wish come true on Friday night when many old friends came  to wish him well,  including Ashes darts team of yesteryear,  Johnny Kennedy, Jack Murray,  Peter Moore,  Frankie Herlihy, and John and Susan Fitzpatrick. Dave Frizell, on behalf of all of us presented him with a lovely clock bearing an etching of Ashes Pub and Caherconree done by Christy Deane. Dai was delighted with it, a real keepsake of Camp, where Dai enjoyed a few happy years.   And like the old days, there was a lovely Irish music session lead by Local musician, Kate Mulcahy-Rowlands, Kevin Ryan,  and singer Nora Rice. The party was organised by John and Susan Fitzpatrick, Dai, we’ll be expecting you back for your 70th,  le Cúnamh Dé.

HAIR HEAVEN

Congratulations Louise and here’s to many many more beautifying  the women of Camp !!

GAA:

Senior-We suffered our first defeat of the year at the weekend, going down to a strong An Ghaeltacht team, 2-18 to 0-9. In hurricane-like conditions in Gallarus, we started against the wind, which literally pinned us in our first half for the majority of the half. Emmet Kennedy, Genie and the two Lenihans battled hard in the first half yet we were unable to cope with the elements, coupled with good An Ghaeltacht pressure and the scores started to flow against us. Shane Foley and Johnny Deane saw  little of the action,  yet they managed to create a few chances when the ball came their way. Down seventeen points at half time, we had the aid of the wind in the second half. We began well, with Genie leading the charge, kicking five points in the second half. The full forward line benefitted from the huge wind and the long passing, yet while we converted point scoring opportunities, goal chances never materialised. Credit is due to the hosts, they were far fitter than us, even at this early stage of the season. Best for us were Genie, Shane Foley, Emmet Kennedy and Gerard Farrelly. TEAM: Conor Guilfolyle, Andrew Finn, Gareth O Donnell, Paddy Shea, Ger Farrelly, Eamonn Hickson (0-2), Colm Barry, Eamon Lenihan, Ger Lenihan (0-1), Kenneth Quirke, Genie Farrell (0-5), David Clifford, Shane Foley, Emmet Kennedy, Johnny Deane, (0-1) SUBS: Jaime Finn, Declan Lindsey, John Bowler, Daniel O Connell, Jaime Quirke, Shane Scanlon, Eoghan O Neill, Denis O Shea. We are playing in the Paudi O Sé tournament at the weekend, our first game is in Annascaul at 12 on Saturday.

U14  team –  West Kerry Round 1 Annascaul/Lispole and Gaeltacht met in round 1 of the West Kerry Un14 league in Gallarus last Thursday evening. Our lads turned in a great first half playing some free flowing football at times to lead 3-6 to 0-3 at half time. However with wind advantage in favour of the home side in the second half Gaeltacht rallied well leaving the score 4-11 to 5-6 at the end in our favour. Rian O’Sullivan who score 3-7 was outstanding while Brian Kennedy, Cathal Ferriter, Joe Kennedy and Sean Brosnan also impressed. Fixture this coming week at home to Dingle.

Last Day of Camp Garda Station – closed on 31st January 2013

Camp Garda Station closed for the last time on Thursday, 31st. January. Dan Mulcahy has many memories of the station operting with 3 Gardai and a Sergeant. Dan’s late mother Catherine Mulcahy and his sisters Mary and Ellie worked in the station in the 1930′s and early 1940′s.
Garda Sean O Morain R.I.P and his wife Brigid held many events in the station for the young people and Camp Drama Group practised their plays and the Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann group met there too. Alas Camp station is among the 9 stations which are now closed in the county. Garda Aidan Smith retired last year and he wasn’t replaced, so we now are under the Dingle area and are conducting our business in Castlegregory Station. So time marches on, but we stll have the memories of good times past in Camp Garda Station !

CAMP NOTES – 28TH JANUARY

CAMP NOTES – 28TH JANUARY 2013

GARDA STATION CLOSURE

At a special Meeting held in the Old School, Camp on Friday night Gárda Inspector Donal Ashe advised the community  that Camp Gárda Station would be closed on Thursday 31st January  and would cease to operate as a Garda station from that date forward.    All Gárda business from 31st January 2013  is to be conducted at Castlegregory Station under Gárda Nina Long.      Gárda Long, Gárda Paul Quinlan, Annascaul and Sergeant John Davis, Dingle  also attended the meeting and discussed how  West Kerry Communities could work together in the future.

The meeting praised the work of  retired Camp Garda Aidan Smith and regret was expressed at the closure of the Camp Gárda Station which one time housed a Sergeant and four Gárdaí working out in the community.     A meeting to plan the setting up of an SMS Text Alert System will be held in the coming weeks –  this operates on the principle of  “ the Gárdaí giving communities live updates on crime.     Gardaí disseminate this information to local Community Alert groups who then forward it to members of the community through text method.    The community would also be in a position to alert the Gárdaí of any suspicious movements or happenings in their community      This system has proved to be a valuable tool in the fight against crime in other parts of rural Ireland.    Condolences to the family of Gárda Adrian O Donoghue  R.I.P. whose young life was ended tragically,  while on duty on Friday night in Dundalk.

COMMUNITY GAMES

Congratulations to Annascaul, Camp and Inch Indoor Soccer who won bronze in the Community Games Finals held in Annascaul on Friday night.

ANNASCAUL GAA

The senior team played Dingle at the weekend, and came away with a draw. Played in blustery conditions, Dingle started well and put us under early pressure, with our full back line of Andrew Finn, David Clifford and Eoghan O Neill defending well. Soon after, we settled well with the two Creans, James and Aidan providing an outlet up front.  Although we missed a number of chances early on, James Crean kicked our first point of the new season and quickly followed up with a great goal. Gerard Lenihan, back from Australia, kicked his first point for Annascaul in over five years minutes later.  Wayward shooting and poor decision-making aside, we worked well in the first half and held a deserved five point lead at halftime.  The early stages of the second half was dominated by Dingle, who were aided by a gale force wind. Scrappy play on our behalf allowed Dingle to find their way back into the game, picking the first two scores of the second half. Genie Farrell, Eamonn Lenihan, James Scanlon and Jason Hickson rallied, breaking us out of our rut and enabling James Crean to kick another score. This vital point took the steam out of the hosts’ run, and scores were few and far between in the remaining fourteen minutes. Our work rate, especially from our half forward line, kept us in the lead right up until the final minute, but Mark Evans from Dingle grabbed an equaliser with a good point. Still, a draw is a good start to the season, despite the numerous chances we created. Best for us were James Crean, Jason Hickson, David Clifford, James Scanlon and Genie Farrell.

TEAM: Tommy Pierce, David Clifford, Andrew Finn, Eoghan O Neill, James Scanlon, Eamonn Hickson, Gerard Farrelly, Eamon Lenihan, Jason Hickson, (0-1f) Kenneth Quirke, Genie Farrell, Declan Lindsey, James Crean (1-4), Aidan Crean, Gerard Lenihan (0-1) Subs: Jaime Finn, Stephen Pierce, Patrick O Shea, Jaime Quirke.

Our next game is Sunday the 10th of February in Annascaul.
