THE SOCCER

Yesterday we travelled to Killarney athletic with a very strong squad. This was very encouraging after last weeks poor turn out. We came away with all three points after winning 3 nil with the goals coming from Francis Herlihy, James Scanlon and an outrageous solo effort from James Crean. On the day the back four was solid with Gearoid O’ Shea outstanding and Eoin Curry again holding his own. Midfield battled well and came out on top although Francis could have had four goals if he brought his shooting boots!! Our two lads up front were excellent throughout. Great effort by everyone involved.

We will be looking forward to our Christmas Party on the 28th of December and we will be selling lines for our Christmas draw over the coming weeks. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

OBITUARY

The death occurred recently of John Joe Fitzgerald, Aughacasla, Castlegregory. He celebrated his 90th birthday only 2 weeks previously on 10th. October. A kind neighbour and gentle person, Joe was also well known to all of us parents and children attending Aughacasla School some years back as the friendly and caring busdriver. He never raised his voice to anybody and all the children loved him. He had a great way with them and news of his passing was met with sadness at home and in faraway places too where many of the pupils of Aughacasla who travelled in the school bus now have made their homes.

Joe  was predeceased by his brother Pat and is survived by his five sisters, Sr. Frances, Sr. John the Baptist, Sr. Elizabeth, Cistercian Order, Glencairn, Waterford, Kitty and Annie, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.  Removal from Lynchs Funeral Home was on Monday, 21st October, at 7pm to St. Mary’s Church, Castlegregory. CAMP NOTES – 5TH AUGUST 2013

OBITUARY

Séan O Driscoll, New Jersey and late of Garrahies, Camp passed to his eternal reward on Tuesday July 23rd in New Jersey.  He is survived by his sons Patrick, Kevin, and Sean and daughters Jenny O’Driscoll Tsiskakis and Pam O’Mahony,  brothers Gene, Michael, Seamus, Patrick and Vincent and sisters, Peggy, Mary, Bernadette and Anne, nieces, nephews, brothers in law, sisters in law and many relatives and friends.   Sympathy is extended to all.

Sean  emigrated to the USA at a very young age, starting his own building contracting business he was a hard worker,  he kept going even when his health was deteriorating in recent years, it didn’t hold him back and he accomplished alot in his short life.  He was 57 years old at the time of his death.  He was a member of the Carpenter’s Union in New York City for over 30 years.  Séan like all of the O Driscoll brothers was a great footballer, however  emigration was to intervene and take him to America like countless others at that time.   He played with Annascaul in his early years and in the USA, he won many football accolades in New York and New Jersey along with training and coaching  teams.  He was a loyal supporter of Kerry all of his life and of the home games which he followed in the Kerryman Newspaper every week.

Sean’s funeral Mass celebrated at Saint Joseph Church, Bogota was attended by a huge congregation of mourners.  The Kennedy brothers Maum and many others from West Kerry now residing in the East coast of America joined Sean’s family at the wake and funeral.  A funeral Mass will be celebrated  later in Camp for the repose of Sean’s soul and  in keeping with his last  wishes  “Camp will be Sean’s  final resting place”.  Séan will be sadly missed by his family and by all who knew him. Go ndéana Dia trocaire ar a anam dilís

This Mass Rock was used during the Penal Days for the celebration of Mass. Close by, at no great distance from the Rock, is ‘Tobareen na Comeena’- the little Communion Well- where, tradition has it the priest secured water for use at Mass, and the faithful broke their fast after Holy Communion.  The water in this well is said to be the purest and the coolest in all of the parish.

ANNASCAUL SENIORS

We travelled to Tarbert on Sunday last, and lost by three points. The game started slowly, with no score registered until the 13th minute, which was a point for the hosts. Soon after, Tarbert scored a scrappy goal to go into a four point lead, until James Crean found the net himself, after good work from Shane Foley. We kicked a number of wides in the second quarter, and went in at halftime trailing by a point, 1-4 to 1-3. The second half started well for us, as Emmet Kennedy won most of the possession around the middle. Unfortunately, a lot of misplaced passes and shots proved our undoing, and Tarbert edged further ahead with a second goal. From then on, we were chasing the game until the final whistle. Final score; Annascaul 1-8, Tarbert 2-8. Best for us were Daniel O Connell, Gearoid O Shea, Emmet Kennedy and Shane Foley. TEAM: Tommy Pierce, David Clifford, Gearoid O Shea, Eoghan O Neill, Ger Farrelly, Colm Barry, Daniel O Connell, Eamonn Hickson, Emmet Kennedy (0-1), James Scanlon, Genie Farrell, Declan Lindsey, Shane Foley (0-2), James Crean (1-5), Johnny Deane. SUBS: Packie Farrell, Jamie Quirke, Stephen Pierce, Darragh Finn.

AUGHACASLA SCHOOL

The Table Quiz run by The Aughacasla National School Parents’ Association in O’Neill’s Bar in Camp was a great success. An enjoyable night was had by all and we would like to thank the participants and local businesses that donated spot prizes.

GAA/SENIORS: We drew with John Mitchel’s at the weekend, on a scoreline of 1-7 to 0-10. We started slowly, being two points down until Eamonn Lenihan got his hand to a long ball and found the net. Shane Foley and Gareth O Donnell, after a great run, picked off points to give us a two point half time lead. Scores in the second half were at a minimum, as we depended on Jason Hickson’s placed kicks and some resolute defending from David Clifford and Ger Farrelly. With minutes remaining, Jason kicked what seemed to be the winning point, only for John Mitchel’s to attack and win a free, resulting in the equalising score. Best for us were James Crean, Emmet Kennedy, David Clifford, Ger Farrelly and Genie Farrell. TEAM: Tommy Pierce, David Clifford, Eamonn Hickson, Ger Farrelly, Daniel O Connell, Keith Moynihan, Gareth O Donnell (0-1), Jason Hickson (0-3, 2f), Emmet Kennedy, Genie Farrell, James Crean (0-1), Gearoid O Shea, Jonathon Deane, Eamon Lenihan (1-0), Shane Foley (0-2).

JUNIOR B: We will play Cordal in Annascaul this coming Friday at 7:30.

ANNASCAUL SOCCER: Annascaul FC are division 2b champions after a 3-0 win over Na Fianna on Sunday. A spirited performance was rewarded by two goals from Shane Foley and one from Eamonn Hickson. Annascaul rode their luck in the first half and only for last ditch defending from Man-of-the match Eamon Lenihan they would been down at half time. A more attacking display in the second half proved the perfect tonic for Annascaul’s ambitions and they ran out comfortable winners. Congrats to Johnny Shea, Gary Finn and their squad.

CAMP NOTES – 13TH MAY 2013

OBITUARY

The death of Paddy Fitzgerald occurred in Oceanview Nursing Home, Camp on Tuesday last.  Paddy was a native of The Maharees.  He travelled widely during his life living for a time in New York and in Hawaii.  He was a great artist,  and despite illness he continued to work on his sculptors creating some wonderful pieces which are now in display in many public places.  He prided himself particularly in working on the Naomhóg, a small wooden boat with which he was so familiar with during his childhood in The Maharees.  Sympathy is extended to his family and many friends.  May He Rest In Peace.

Sympathy is also extended to the family and friends of  Séan John Fitzgerald, Aughacasla who also died recently.  Séan was a  gentleman and a friend to many people during his lifetime.  God rest his gentle soul.

THE GATHERING

Camp was ably represented at “The Gathering”  in The Malton Hotel, Killarney on Friday night.  Paddy Joe Crean, Knockgloss Beg attended with 20 members of The Kerrymans Association in London. Michaél Quirke, Garrahies,  was there with the Cork, Kerrymans Association and Tom Kennedy, Maum was with the New York contingent.   Paddy Joe Crean and Michéal Quirke were classmates in Camp National School and hadn’t met in 55 years since they parted at the school gate so long, long ago.  The Gathering is a new tourism initiative aimed at bringing people back home thus helping the economy here in this country.  There was a huge attendance from all over the world

at the function on Friday night and by all accounts it was a great success.

ANNASCAUL GAA

SENIORS: After a number of weeks off, we resumed our county league campaign with a loss, away to Finuge  on a scoreline of 0-11 to 0-8. Down by two at half time, we failed to peg the home team back and can have no complaints about the loss. Best for us were Jason Hickson, James Crean, David Clifford, Genie Farrell and Colm Barry. TEAM: Tommy Pierce, Colm Barry, Eamonn Hickson (0-1), David Clifford, James Scanlon, Keith Moynihan, Ger Farrelly, Emmet Kennedy, Jason Hickson (0-2f), Eamonn Lenihan, Genie Farrell (0-1f), Gearoid O Shea, Aidan Crean (0-3f), James Crean, Jonathon Deane (0-1).

JUNIOR B’S: The Junior team lost out to Lispole on a 1-8 to 1-7 scoreline at the weekend. Leading by five points at half time, the wind, and some accurate shooting from Lispole, overhauled our advantage at the full time whistle. Still, we are in a good grouping this year, and should pick up some points as the league continues. Best for us were Daniel O Connell, Shane Scanlon, Declan Lindsey, Jamie Finn, John Bowler and Francis Herlihy. Our next outing is this coming Friday in Annascaul at 7.30, against Cordal. TEAM: Chris O Driscoll, Ger Farrelly, Daniel O Connell, Paddy O Shea, Shane Scanlon (0-1), Declan Lindsey, Stephen Pierce, Eamonn Lenihan (0-1), Gearoid O Shea, Daniel Flannery, John Bowler (1-0), Darragh Finn, Francis Herlihy (0-1), Jamie Finn (0-2f), Fintan Herlihy (0-2).   We will play Cordal in Annascaul this coming Friday at 7:30.

COISTE NA N-OG

Un14 County Final: Well done to the Annascaul/Lispole team on their great County League Final win in Blennerville Wednesday last. The 7pt half-time lead looked like it would not be enough against this highly rated Cordal/Scartaglin side who went into this final unbeaten all year. However, having to face into more stormy conditions in the 2nd half Annascaul/Lispole full forward Brian Kennedy, who had scored 1-5 in 1st half was moved to full back and Rian O’ Sullivan was moved to midfield having scored 2-2. These switches turned out to our advantage as both lads inspired their team on in dire weather conditions. The Annascaul/Lispole defence also came more into the game closing down Cordal/Scart forwards .Goalkeeper Kieran O’ Connor was called on to make some fine saves, to keep his team in the game. Annascaul/Lispole lead by 2pts reaching the closing stages of this exciting final when Brian Kennedy made a tremendous rally up the field that lead for a 20m free been awarded. Rian O’ Sullivan kicked over the free to seal a memorable County Final win.  Well done to all the panel members for the great spirit they have shown all year and to the mentors, Tim Falvey and David Clifford for this sucess especially after being well beaten in their round one meeting in Cordal/Scart. Captain Cathal Ferriter, who was outstanding all through the league received the trophy from County Secretary, Tagdh O’ Halloran after the game.

SOCCER

Annascaul FC are division 2b champions after a 3-0 win over Na Fianna on Sunday. A spirited performance was rewarded by two goals from Shane Foley and one from Eamonn Hickson. Annascaul rode their luck in the first half and only for last ditch defending from Man-of-the match Eamon Lenihan they would been down at half time. On Sunday, April 14th.  Camp United came out on top in a hard fought contest against LB Rovers        in Ballybunion.  James Scanlon scored the 2 goals. We can count ourselves unlucky on Sunday last drawing 2-2 at home to Tralee dynamos. Dynamos played well in the first half leading 1-0 at the half. We really raised our game on the second half which paid off when James Scanlon equalized five minutes  after the restart. We were now dominating and got our reward when Aidan Crean neatly slotted home with fifteen minutes left. With five minutes to go Dynamos got a free at the edge of the box and from that hit the top corner of the net. The desire from our players to win has to be admired and we were roared on all through the game by our great support. Talks of the replay being in two weeks time but yet to be confirmed. Team: Chris O Driscoll,  David Clifford, James Farrell, Eoghan O Neill, Genie Farrell, James Scanlon, Gerry O Sullivan, Francis Herlihy, David Smith (Johnny O Driscoll), Aidan Crean, James Crean.

ANNASCAUL GAA

SENIORS: Annascaul 0-6 John Mitchel’s 1-11

John Mitchel’s advanced to the second round of the Intermediate championship after a comprehensive win over Annascaul back in West Kerry. Annascaul, playing with the aid of a breeze in the first half, started brightly. Jason Hickson led the way, kicking three huge points in the opening fifteen minutes. The visitors held their composure to claw their way back into the game, with Alan O Donoghue and Niall Sheehy prominent. Despite missing a number of chances, Mitchel’s took the lead through points from Sheehy, Wayne Conway and Shaun Maloney. While they battled bravely in the first half, Annascaul failed to find a way past a tenacious Mitchel’s defence, with Brendan O Mahoney sweeping everything that came his way. With referee Peter Lyons’ whistle, Annascaul trailed at half time, 0-3 to 0-5. After the break, Mitchel’s took up where they left off and popped over two early points. But, the home team didn’t lie down. James Crean and Kenneth Quirke, who was the Annascaul’s best performer on the day, kicked two excellent efforts in the space of two minutes. However, from the next kickout, Mitchel’s long ball worked to good effect, putting the Annascaul rear-guard under pressure and resulting in the concession of a penalty. Wayne Conway slotted it, and it was effectively game over from that point on. Emmet Kennedy, Genie Farrell and Jason Hickson worked hard for the home side, but with a rampant Alan O Donoghue and Niall Sheehy, Mitchel’s sailed home.

We play Ardfert in the County league this coming weekend in Annascaul. Time to be confirmed.

ANNASCAUL GAA

SENIORS: We kicked off our county league in great fashion over the weekend, recording a 2-9 to 1-11 win over Currow. Playing with the aid of a breeze, we took our time getting into the game, and scores were at a minimum in the opening quarter. Aidan and James Crean were excelling with the direct ball into our full forward line, with both getting on the score sheet. Currow refused to lie down however, and they kept in contact with scores of their own, despite the best efforts of Gareth O Donnell and David Clifford in the full back line. Long, high ball was used to good effect soon after, as Aidan Crean used his strength well to score two excellent goals in the space of five minutes. Knowing the wind was a major asset, we used it to good advantage to lead well at half time, 2-7 to 0-4. The second half was all Currow though, and they clawed their way back into the game and were only down a point with ten minutes remaining. Without a score in the second half at that stage, we were under extreme pressure, added to by Emmet Kennedy’s second yellow card. Still, we increased our work rate to compensate for the sending off and held out for a one point win. Best for us were Jason Hickson, Aidan and James Crean, and Shane Foley. TEAM: Tommy Pierce, David Clifford, Gareth O Donnell, James Scanlon, Colm Barry, Kenneth Quirke, Eamonn Hickson (0-2), Emmet Kennedy, Jason Hickson (0-1), Shane Foley, Michael Driscoll, James Crean (0-2), Aidan Crean, (2-4), Genie Farrell. SUBS USED: Keith Moynihan, Declan Lindsey.

We are playing John Mitchels on Saturday in the Intermediate Championship in Annascaul. Time to be confirmed. All support is greatly welcomed.

SENIORS: We lost out to Lispole over the weekend in our final West Kerry league game on a scoreline of 1-20 to 2-9. We started well, with Jonathon Deane finding the net to give us an early lead. Winning the breaking ball in the middle, we led by four points at the quarter way mark. Unfortunately, Lispole upped their work rate, cutting the supply of ball to our main scorers, Aidan Crean and Jonathon Deane. Despite David Clifford and Ger Farrelly’s best defending, we were down at half time by six points. The second half provided little respite for us, as Lispole found the net within minutes to give us a mountain to climb. And again despit of Emmet and Genie’s efforts,  we never got close enough to threaten Lispole after that. Best for us were Kenneth Quirke, Emmet Kennedy, Genie Farrell and Jonathon Deane. TEAM: Conor Guilfoyle, Paddy O Shea, Eamonn Hickson, David Clifford, Colm Barry, Daniel O Connell, Ger Farrelly, Emmet Kennedy, James Scanlon, Kenneth Quirke, Genie Farrell, Shane Foley, Aidan Crean, Jonathon Deane, Declan Lindsey. Subs: John Bowler, Jaime Quirke, Shane Scanlon.
