ANNASCAUL GAA

SENIORS: We took part in the Paidi O Sé tournament with mixed results. Playing Cooley Kickhams from Louth on Saturday morning, we got off to great start, winning the quarter final with ease. Hours later, we were in Blennerville playing Achill from County Mayo, and pulled through after a very tough encounter. Unfortunately, we picked up a number of injuries over the first two games, which meant we had a weakened team on Sunday in the final. Playing against St. Pats, we began well and were unlucky to trail at the break by four points. As the game wore on, fatigue caught up with us and St. Pats ran out comfortable winners. Regardless of the final result, we benefitted greatly from the tournament over the weekend, with every member of our panel getting considerable game time. Best for us over the weekend were Genie, Ger Farrelly, Gareth O Donnell, James Scanlon and Declan Lindsey. Annascaul GAA would like to thank the organisers of the tournament for the invitation, we were delighted to play our part in honouring Paidi’s memory.

We lost out to Lispole in our final West Kerry league game on a scoreline of 1-20 to 2-9. We started well, with Jonathon Deane finding the net to give us an early lead. Winning the breaking ball in the middle, we led by four points at the quarter way mark. Unfortunately, Lispole upped their work rate, cutting the supply of ball to our main scorers, Aidan Crean and Jonathon Deane. Despite David Clifford and Ger Farrelly’s best defending, we were down at half time by six points. The second half provided little respite for us, as Lispole found the net within minutes to give us a mountain to climb. And again despit of Emmet and Genie’s efforts,  we never got close enough to threaten Lispole after that. Best for us were Kenneth Quirke, Emmet Kennedy, Genie Farrell and Jonathon Deane. TEAM: Conor Guilfoyle, Paddy O Shea, Eamonn Hickson, David Clifford, Colm Barry, Daniel O Connell, Ger Farrelly, Emmet Kennedy, James Scanlon, Kenneth Quirke, Genie Farrell, Shane Foley, Aidan Crean, Jonathon Deane, Declan Lindsey. Subs: John Bowler, Jamie Quirke, Shane Scanlon.

OBITUARY

The tragic death on Thursday last of Vincent Wyles, Aughacasla has plunged the entire area into deep shock and sadness. Vincent was a singer and musician with the “Castle Ramblers”  a new local young and upcoming band, he was a born entertainer taking part in Camp Youth Club Drama productions and even in the last few weeks he took part in the Charity fundraising Mock Wedding in Castle. Vincent is a huge loss to his family, his partner Amy and little son Colm Paul, his mother Breda and sisters Lisa and Anne Marie. He will be sadly missed by his Uncles, Aunts and all his extended family,  his many many friends and the community of Castlegregory and beyond where he was known and loved and where he made a real difference during his all too short life of 25 years on this earth. Sympathy is extended to all the family.  Go ndéana Dia trócaire ar a anam dilís.

The death of Catherine “Ciss”  O Donnell,  nee Dowd, London and late of Goulane, Castlegregory occurred in Wimbledon recently.  Catherine’s husband, the late Jimmy “Sand” O Donnell was a native of Slieve Camp and  they both visited regularly down through the years.  Catherine reached the great old age of 97 years.  She was laid to rest in London following Requiem Mass in St. Winifreds Church, Wimbledon.   Sympathy is extended to her daughters Margaret and Bernie and her son John.

60 YEARS YOUNG

Dave Frizell, on behalf of all of us presented him with a lovely clock bearing an etching of Ashes Pub and Caherconree done by Christy Deane. Dai was delighted with it, a real keepsake of Camp, where Dai enjoyed a few happy years.   And like the old days, there was a lovely Irish music session lead by Local musician, Kate Mulcahy-Rowlands, Kevin Ryan,  and singer Nora Rice. The party was organised by John and Susan Fitzpatrick, Dai, we’ll be expecting you back for your 70th,  le Cúnamh Dé.

GAA:

Senior-We suffered our first defeat of the year at the weekend, going down to a strong An Ghaeltacht team, 2-18 to 0-9. In hurricane-like conditions in Gallarus, we started against the wind, which literally pinned us in our first half for the majority of the half. Emmet Kennedy, Genie and the two Lenihans battled hard in the first half yet we were unable to cope with the elements, coupled with good An Ghaeltacht pressure and the scores started to flow against us. Shane Foley and Johnny Deane saw  little of the action,  yet they managed to create a few chances when the ball came their way. Down seventeen points at half time, we had the aid of the wind in the second half. We began well, with Genie leading the charge, kicking five points in the second half. The full forward line benefitted from the huge wind and the long passing, yet while we converted point scoring opportunities, goal chances never materialised. Credit is due to the hosts, they were far fitter than us, even at this early stage of the season. Best for us were Genie, Shane Foley, Emmet Kennedy and Gerard Farrelly. TEAM: Conor Guilfolyle, Andrew Finn, Gareth O Donnell, Paddy Shea, Ger Farrelly, Eamonn Hickson (0-2), Colm Barry, Eamon Lenihan, Ger Lenihan (0-1), Kenneth Quirke, Genie Farrell (0-5), David Clifford, Shane Foley, Emmet Kennedy, Johnny Deane, (0-1) SUBS: Jaime Finn, Declan Lindsey, John Bowler, Daniel O Connell, Jaime Quirke, Shane Scanlon, Eoghan O Neill, Denis O Shea. We are playing in the Paudi O Sé tournament at the weekend, our first game is in Annascaul at 12 on Saturday.

U14  team –  West Kerry Round 1 Annascaul/Lispole and Gaeltacht met in round 1 of the West Kerry Un14 league in Gallarus last Thursday evening. Our lads turned in a great first half playing some free flowing football at times to lead 3-6 to 0-3 at half time. However with wind advantage in favour of the home side in the second half Gaeltacht rallied well leaving the score 4-11 to 5-6 at the end in our favour. Rian O’Sullivan who score 3-7 was outstanding while Brian Kennedy, Cathal Ferriter, Joe Kennedy and Sean Brosnan also impressed. Fixture this coming week at home to Dingle.

CAMP NOTES – 28TH JANUARY

CAMP NOTES – 28TH JANUARY 2013

GARDA STATION CLOSURE

At a special Meeting held in the Old School, Camp on Friday night Gárda Inspector Donal Ashe advised the community  that Camp Gárda Station would be closed on Thursday 31st January  and would cease to operate as a Garda station from that date forward.    All Gárda business from 31st January 2013  is to be conducted at Castlegregory Station under Gárda Nina Long.      Gárda Long, Gárda Paul Quinlan, Annascaul and Sergeant John Davis, Dingle  also attended the meeting and discussed how  West Kerry Communities could work together in the future.

The meeting praised the work of  retired Camp Garda Aidan Smith and regret was expressed at the closure of the Camp Gárda Station which one time housed a Sergeant and four Gárdaí working out in the community.     A meeting to plan the setting up of an SMS Text Alert System will be held in the coming weeks –  this operates on the principle of  “ the Gárdaí giving communities live updates on crime.     Gardaí disseminate this information to local Community Alert groups who then forward it to members of the community through text method.    The community would also be in a position to alert the Gárdaí of any suspicious movements or happenings in their community      This system has proved to be a valuable tool in the fight against crime in other parts of rural Ireland.    Condolences to the family of Gárda Adrian O Donoghue  R.I.P. whose young life was ended tragically,  while on duty on Friday night in Dundalk.

The senior team played Dingle at the weekend, and came away with a draw. Played in blustery conditions, Dingle started well and put us under early pressure, with our full back line of Andrew Finn, David Clifford and Eoghan O Neill defending well. Soon after, we settled well with the two Creans, James and Aidan providing an outlet up front.  Although we missed a number of chances early on, James Crean kicked our first point of the new season and quickly followed up with a great goal. Gerard Lenihan, back from Australia, kicked his first point for Annascaul in over five years minutes later.  Wayward shooting and poor decision-making aside, we worked well in the first half and held a deserved five point lead at halftime.  The early stages of the second half was dominated by Dingle, who were aided by a gale force wind. Scrappy play on our behalf allowed Dingle to find their way back into the game, picking the first two scores of the second half. Genie Farrell, Eamonn Lenihan, James Scanlon and Jason Hickson rallied, breaking us out of our rut and enabling James Crean to kick another score. This vital point took the steam out of the hosts’ run, and scores were few and far between in the remaining fourteen minutes. Our work rate, especially from our half forward line, kept us in the lead right up until the final minute, but Mark Evans from Dingle grabbed an equaliser with a good point. Still, a draw is a good start to the season, despite the numerous chances we created. Best for us were James Crean, Jason Hickson, David Clifford, James Scanlon and Genie Farrell.

TEAM: Tommy Pierce, David Clifford, Andrew Finn, Eoghan O Neill, James Scanlon, Eamonn Hickson, Gerard Farrelly, Eamon Lenihan, Jason Hickson, (0-1f) Kenneth Quirke, Genie Farrell, Declan Lindsey, James Crean (1-4), Aidan Crean, Gerard Lenihan (0-1) Subs: Jaime Finn, Stephen Pierce, Patrick O Shea, Jaime Quirke.

Our next game is Sunday the 10th of February in Annascaul.

CAMP TWINNING CONCERT

Camp Town Twinning organised a lovely Christmas concert on Sunday 16th Dec.  Almost all of the local organisations had a performance on stage on the night.  John Chambers shared MC with Bríd Ní Mhorain and Mary Uí Mhorain, who put huge effort into the  organisation of the night welcomed everybody.    Our local Seanachaí,  Seamus O Donnell told a few stories in his own inimitable way and as always he went down wonderfully  !   while his wife Sheila recited Seamus’s  own poem,  a recollection of a Camp Fair long long ago,  Jobbers making bargains and local mothers peeping in through the small window pane of Tadgh Moynihan’s hall at the Junction on Camp Fair night,   curiously observing the lovely local girls waltzing with their partners across a  shiny floor to wonderful local musicians.   Sheila did a splendid job bringing tears to the eyes of all present reminiscing on those halcyon days of youth.    Dan Dennehy,  no stranger to the boards of Camp stage had his own poem about West Kerry composed by himself and delivered with eloquence.   Young children did some figure dancing and Camp Drama Group ladies did a take on the Spice Girls while Mike O Neill and Anne Eager were in the Operating Theatre, indeed, a laugh a minute from two performers who were among the main characters  in Camp Drama’s  recent production of  “Its on, Its Off.”     Dingle’s  David Geaney world champion Irish step dancer entertained us also and the night could not be complete without a session of music from Milo O Brien, Cian and Michael O Moráin and Mike O Shea.   Adam O Donnell Ferriter and Lenny McGaley entertained us, on piano,  first time on stage for these very talented young boys.   Geraldine O Driscoll sang some lovely songs accompanied by Mike O Shea.   Hazel Evans told a Christmas story.      And there was lots more, a great night of wonderful entertainment and everybody  agreed,  there should be more,  so we all await another concert in the near future  !  We have the talent in Camp  !  Thank you to Camp Town Twinning and to Mary Uí Mhoráin, Breda and Martin Quirke organisers and all the performers on the night !   A bualadh bos díobh go léir

HANDS ACROSS THE OCEAN

Pat Briggs who lives in Alameda in San Francisco wishes to send New Year Greetings to his friends in Camp.   Pat first arrived in Ashes Pub late one night a few years ago,  he became acquainted with John Doyle and ever since Camp is his top holiday destination.   On that fateful night it was a darts night in Ashes and he joined in to play his first game ever and he enjoyed it.    Later Thomas Ashe invited him to pull a pint and for the rest of the night Pat helped Thomas serving behind the bar.

So when Pat came back last year, he headed into Ashes to enquire about John,  only to find out that John Doyle now had his own B/B,  The Junction House.   He turned up to the door to stay for one night and stayed for his entire 10 day holiday.   Pat visited all the sites in the Peninsula and around Killarney as well.    He even met the late Paidi O Shea  and loved the uniqueness of Paidi’s  pub in Ventry.      Jackie Goodwin took him out fishing in The Maharees and Paddy O Brien whom he met in The Junction Bar put him in touch with Hugh O Donnell who sold him a Sléan for cutting turf.   He duly went to Maum to try out some turf cutting !     Now he is looking for a handle for the Sléan as he failed to find one in San Francisco,  so that’s another  job for Paddy O Brien,  when Pat visits again in May.   Pat enjoyed a walk in The National Park in Killarney with the Camp Tidy Towns.   Next time round he wants to go to an Annascaul game of football as he missed out on that last time and he got friendly with the local lads and he wants to see them play.     Pat Briggs whose ancestors hailed from Kildare considers himself a real adopted Campman and when I met up with him in The Chieftain for a fine Irish breakfast,  I realised that Pat is doing his own promotion for Camp,   as inside the counter are some lovely post cards of Camp and West Kerry and the Bars and Restaurants are also up there.   Proprietor of The Chieftain is none other than Tralee woman Geraldine Nagle Murphy,  she was gone back home for the holidays so we did not meet up with her !     Pat was delighted to receive a copy of Camp Calendar 2013.    So from Pat Briggs in San Francisco, “ A Happy New Year  to all my friends in Camp “    !!!

CAMP NOTES – 19TH DECEMBER 2012

OBITUARY

The news of the death of Paddy Quirke on Tuesday last  in London was received with great sadness in Camp.      These  Notes in The Kerryman were Paddy’s weekly window into Camp.   He looked forward to the paper and read it from cover to cover.   He came home regularly and rarely if ever missed Camp Fair and Camp Junction Rally.    Eugie Deane penned the following tribute to Paddy’s memory, another great Camp and West Kerry Footballer gone to his eternal reward.

“Paddy played football in the school field,  where many a great Camp footballer learned the game.  He was right half back on the Camp Minor Team that won the Castlegregory District League in 1953.   Alot of people would have called him “the man with the cap”  as he always wore a cap playing.   To the man with the cap who was a great GAA man,  I say Goodbye  –  From,  a friend in Camp Football –  Eugie”.

Paddy played with Annascaul after Camp amalgamated with the club,  winning a West Kerry Championship Medal in 1956 and he  played with West Kerry Minors 1956/57  before leaving for London.    On arrival in  London in the early 1960’s  Paddy joined the Kingdom Club.   He was to win many football accolades with The Kingdom and was held in high esteem in the club and acknowledged as a very good footballer,   Paddy enjoyed  the game playing alongside his Camp neighbours the O Driscoll brothers of Camp.      He was an ardent soccer supporter too and he followed Queen Parks Rangers down through the years in London.    He was a sportsman true and true and keenly followed Football and soccer in every code throughout his life.

Paddy is survived by his wife  Bridie,  Daughters Eileen and Caroline and sons Morris and Patrick, Daughters in law and Son in law and Grand Daughters,  relatives and friends.   Sympathy is extended to all.

Paddy’s funeral service will take place in London on Christmas ‘Eve and a memorial service for him will be held in Camp in the New Year.     Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilís.

There was shock and sadness at the sudden death of Kerry and West Kerry Football Legend, Paidi O Shea on Saturday morning.    Paidi’s pub in Ventry has served as an icon for Kerry and West Kerry football over the years.      The holiday was never complete for the visitor without taking in a visit to Paidi’s  and if he wasn’t there to greet you,  the memorabilia on the walls were adequate to ensure you got the wonderful story of Kerry and West Kerry football and some political events as well !  Paidi opened Camp Walking Festival a few years back and during his time as Director of Failte Ireland,   he got as much support, help and advice as he could for any project we had on hand at the time.   This is truly the end of an era and of a great man who leaves a huge legacy behind him.   To his wife Máire, Daughters, Neasa and Siún and son Pádraig Og and  all his extended family and friends Sympathy is extended.[i]

CAMP NOTES – 26TH NOVEMBER 2012

OBITUARY
The death of Brendan Deane, Beheenagh, Camp occurred on Friday 16th November. Fr. John Buckley PP in his homily at Bendan’s requiem Mass at St. Marys Church, Camp on Tuesday said it all, Brendan was a real family man, happy with his wife Maureen and his family in his home in Beheenagh, he wanted for little more in life ! Brendan loved the land and took great pride in his farm and his animals, he cultivated and developed the land throughout his long life and like those who came before him handed those skills and traditions down to his family, to another generation. He was highly regarded in the farming community for rearing quality sheep and he won many awards and prizes for his quality sheep and rams in events all over the county and beyond. A huge congregation attended the removal from Hogans Funeral Home, Tralee on Sunday evening and again joined Brendan’s family on Monday at St. Marys Church, Camp and Ballinknockane Cemetary, where he was laid to rest. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam Dilís. Brendan is survived by his wife Maureen, daughters Helen and Mary, sons, Pádraig, Thomas, John and Breandán, brother Eugie and Patrick, Grandchildren and extended family, relatives and many friends and neighbours. Sympathy is extended to all.
The death also occurred of Bridie Griffin (nee Kennedy), Deerpark, Lispole on Friday, 16th November last. Bridie’s late husband was Dan Griffin R.I.P. native of Camp. Bridie and her family kept the link with Camp going over the years, visiting cousin Pauline and extended family in Camp and Aughacasla. Go ndéana Dia trocaire ar a h-anam dilís. Camp Sheep Fair

Camp Annual Sheep fair is held on September 18th. in the village of Camp. The fair dates back centuries to the time of Lord Ventry when a ram auction was held in the village. Lord Ventry brought the first black faced scotch breed of sheep to West Kerry. He carried 1,000 ewes on his lands in Beheenagh, Camp at this time. The fair has survived down through the years and is as always a great social occasion too for the local sheepfarmers and the families of Camp. In recent years the fair has developed and now we have horses and donkeys, fowl and other animals along with the sheep for sale at the fair.
Camp Fair is one of a very few fairs left that sheep are penned at the roadside and buyers come along and make bargains as in days gone by. No weights or measures are available like the marts, so its very much take the sheep as you see her ! and trust the farmer to sell you a good animal that will be healthy and breed well into the future.
The Sheep Show is one of the big events at Camp Fair. Farmers show their quality sheep and they are judged and perpetual trophies in memory of Campmen now herding in greener pastures, are given out for the best animals. The traditional mutton pie is the staple diet on the day. The children gather from school and have water fights and everybody enjoy a nice evening in the local pubs where there is great music and song late into the night.
