CAMP NOTES – WEST KERRY LIVE – 22ND JANUARY 2014

TRANSITION KERRY

Transition Kerry is made up of a group of people interested in issues relating to sustainable living and resilient communities. Formed in 2007, the group have organised regular information evenings dealing with issues such as waste management, water conservation, energy use, sustainable transport, local food, climate change and peak oil. Transition Kerry have also been involved with a number of day events at festivals, harvest fairs, etc  – all with a view to informing the community of the life choices they can make that will have a positive environmental impact and in many instances save them money.

Transition Kerry have designed a series of six, 1.5 hour workshops for community groups/Tidy town which will kick off in early 2014. The workshops will provide a hands on, practical approach to the following issues;

How to plan and design communities, Energy Choices, Preventing Food Waste, Water Conservation

Food Resilience, Final Workshop.

There is a charge of €20 in total per person and this money will be returned to the community group to help develop a project that may emerge from the discussions at the workshops. The workshops will only work where there is good participation as it is not envisaged  to have a sitting/listening. COOKERY NIGHT FUNDRAISER

A fundraiser – Cookery with Mark Doe will be held in  Soly Sombra, Killorglin on Thursday January 31st. At 7.00 p.m. in aid of Killorglin Childcare Centre. Raffle and Spot Prizes on the night.

THE MICHAEL O DONNELL ANNUAL DARTS TOURMENT

The Michael O Donnell Annual Darts Tournament will be held this Saturday, 25th January at The Junction Bar and the Final will be held on 31st. January in Bolands Bar, Castlegregory. All proceeds raised will go towards Dun Laoghaire Rehabilitation Centre.

BIRTHDAY BASH

Paddy O Brien has reached “three quarters of a century” and to celebrate Paddy was joined by all his family and friends  at The Junction Bar, Camp on Friday night for music song and lovely food and refreshments.  Here’s hoping the friendly bus driver “ who never leaves anybody behind”  enjoys the next quarter !!  Happy Days Paddy, go maire tu an chead !!

CAMP FAIR – Down Memory Lane

And on Saturday spare a thought for the many farmers in West Kerry who brought cattle and sheep to Camp Fair on January 26th !!  They now herd in greener pastures and The January Fair is assigned to  history.  Only Camp September Fair has survived and Annascaul has Ballinclare in May and October, wonderful traditions and indeed a necessary part of a vibrant agricultural  economy at the time  !  Up until the late 1950’s There were monthly Fairs in Castlegregory and in Dingle.  These are no more, but the memories and stories linked with them still live on in the folklore of our times.

Senior Citizens Annual Social at The Dingle Sceilig Hotel on Sunday 9th February @ 2.00 p.m. Dinner and Refreshments served. Music – Billy Donegan – Price –E15.00. Failte roimh cách. Everybody welcome.
