CAMP NOTES – 5TH AUGUST 2013
OBITUARY
Séan O Driscoll, New Jersey and late of Garrahies, Camp passed to his eternal reward on Tuesday July 23rd in New Jersey. He is survived by his sons Patrick, Kevin, and Sean and daughters Jenny O’Driscoll Tsiskakis and Pam O’Mahony, brothers Gene, Michael, Seamus, Patrick and Vincent and sisters, Peggy, Mary, Bernadette and Anne, nieces, nephews, brothers in law, sisters in law and many relatives and friends. Sympathy is extended to all.
Sean emigrated to the USA at a very young age, starting his own building contracting business he was a hard worker, he kept going even when his health was deteriorating in recent years, it didn’t hold him back and he accomplished alot in his short life. He was 57 years old at the time of his death. He was a member of the Carpenter’s Union in New York City for over 30 years. Séan like all of the O Driscoll brothers was a great footballer, however emigration was to intervene and take him to America like countless others at that time. He played with Annascaul in his early years and in the USA, he won many football accolades in New York and New Jersey along with training and coaching teams. He was a loyal supporter of Kerry all of his life and of the home games which he followed in the Kerryman Newspaper every week.
Sean’s funeral Mass celebrated at Saint Joseph Church, Bogota was attended by a huge congregation of mourners. The Kennedy brothers Maum and many others from West Kerry now residing in the East coast of America joined Sean’s family at the wake and funeral. A funeral Mass will be celebrated later in Camp for the repose of Sean’s soul and in keeping with his last wishes “Camp will be Sean’s final resting place”. Séan will be sadly missed by his family and by all who knew him. Go ndéana Dia trocaire ar a anam dilís
CAMP FAMILY FUN DAY AND CASH COW
Camp Family Fun Day and Cash Cow event held on Sunday last was a huge success. Over E7,000 was raised and still counting ! All proceeds go towards Camp Community Sports Field Development.
The lucky young man who guessed the spot where the cow did her business was Paudy Kennedy from Killarney whose Mom is Deirdre McCormack from Camp and Dad, Dan both loyal supporters of Camp over the years! Congratulations to Paudy E500 was the prize presented to Paudy by Gene Finn Chairman Camp Community Council. The weight of Helen Greensmyths lovely Cake was 7.6ozs correctly calculated by local football supremo James Crean and Niamh Finn just home on holidays from Abu Dhabi. To solve the dilemma the cake was cut and halved between the 2 neighbours, Gene and Norah on behalf of their siblings did the honours !! Thomas Ashe and Nora Rice Judge of the dog show did a tremendous job and there were some beautiful dogs in the show arena. There was a rosette for almost all of the dogs. Thanks to the owners who brought them and showed them off, a great spectacle and enjoyed by all. The children’s sports went well too and Tony Casey made sure that everybody went home with a medal. The soccer tournament brought a big entry too, Lol O Leary and Kenneth Quirke did a great job on the day organising the games. Hannah Herlihy and Martin Quirke did a wonderful job on the barbeque which was flying all day long and Mary Knightly co-ordinated the kitchen making sure everybody got fed and looked after. There was a big crowd in the hall watching the football games on a big screen. Thanks to Frances Herlihy and Gearoid O Shea and Micko Horan who provided and erected the big screen. Christy Deane organised the amplification and the music all day long, creating a lovely atmosphere and the one and only Séan Barry was our very able MC for the day. Thanks to Paddy O Brien too (who took a break from his taxi business on Saturday) to take our Secretary Ian Hassel around the area promoting the Cash Cow on Air (loud speaker) , great job ! All helped and to our Treasurers Michelle and Marie Farrell and Mairead Crean too who had the big job of computerising the field grid accommodating the cow ! And the gate was manned by Seamus Griffin, Séan O Morain and John Joe O Donnell who did a wonderful job. And lastly but by no means least a huge thank you to Jack Crean who owns the Cow, “Now worth her weight in Gold” .
Jack and his son David led “Lola” the cow, into the field at 4.30 p.m and she obliged at 6.10pm almost to the minute of the time of her performance of the 2012 Cash Cow.
Thanks to the many many people who helped out before the event selling tickets and on the day in any way. Camp cash Cow 2013 was a huge success and a credit to the community ! well done everybody !
