The Killiney and Kilgobbin Church Sale will be held in the Old School, Camp on Bank Holiday Monday 6th August at 11.00 a.m. There will be Teas/Coffee, home baking, face painting for the children a raffle on the day and stalls with lots of items for sale. Everybody welcome !
WALK FOR KERRY BRANCH – IRISH KIDNEY ASSOC.
The walk in Camp on Saturday raised over €4000 for the Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association!
What an achievement, We had a brilliant day again! Blessed with the weather! Thanks so much to everyone who helped out and took part on the day! We will do it all again next year.
And Congratulations to Jimmy O Dwyer and Jane Fitzgerald and all the team who made it happen ! Well done !
NIGHT AT THE DOGS
Annascaul GAA will be holding a fundraising Night at the Dogs at Kingdom Greyhound Stadium, Saturday 8th September. Tickets, priced at €10, include entry to the race track on the night and a race programme, and can now be purchased from players and committee members. As well as being a fun night out, this is an important fundraising event for our club development plans and we look forward to as much support as possible
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS,HOME AND AWAY
Alex O Donnell, Knockglossmore got the surprise of his life when he arrived for a quite pint in The Railway Tavern a few weeks ago ! Awaiting to greet him were his entire family and friends who were there to wish him a very happy 30th. Birthday. Next day Alex flew back to work to Las Vegas a place he has grown to love too and has made some great friends !
And in New York last weekend, Kenneth Quirke, Curra celebrated his 30th birthday along with all his family and many friends Irish and American, including the newest member, baby Mellisa born to his sister Martina in the last six weeks. Congratulations, Alex and Kenneth, Go maire sibh an chéad ! And welcome to Melissa !
RAILWAY SIGN GONE MISSING
It has come to the notice of local people that the plaque erected on the Water Tower at Camp Junction has been removed. The inscription on the plaque reads “ Tralee & Dingle Light Railway 1891 – 1953. This is the site of Castlegregory Junction”. Maybe somebody out there knows of its whereabouts ! It would be great to have it back where it belongs over the door of the Water Tower in Camp Junction !
LAST JAMIE WRENN AND MIKE DEANE MEMORIAL WALK
And so the final curtain falls and The Jamie Wrenn/Mike Deane memorial walk in aid of Recovery Haven, Tralee made its way from Tralee to Castle for the last time on Saturday 21st. July. The walk in memory of two local Castle legends raised E95,000 for cancer charities over the years. The larger than life wonderful character Mike Deane who passed away two years ago was one of the great supporters of this walk which began when Aughacasla man Jamie Wrenn drove his horse and trap all the way to Tralee accompanied by large numbers of neighbours and friends to raise money for local cancer services. Mike Deane and a dedicated committee headed up by Mary Lynch and Sandra Finn kept the walk going after Jamie passed away. And so there is great credit due to all those wonderful people ! And May Mike Deane and Jamie Wrenn Rest In Peace ! A spectacular aerial photograph of the walk passing Camp Junction is published on Facebook, this photo deserves a spot on the history pages of our time !
GREEN ACRES UPGRADE
Green Acres Caravan Park, Aughacasla, Castlegregory has enhanced it’s outdoor facilities by installing a new playground and an astro turf pitch.The opening was held on Monday 22nd July 2018 with Maria Walsh, International Rose of Tralee 2014 doing the honours. Deacon Denis Kelleher was also on hand to bless the park and the facilities on the day. The park was opened in the late 1980’s by Tom & Eileen Keane and in recent years their son Michael and his wife Susan have taken over the running. Congratulations all !
SUMMERTIME
And what a wonderful summer it was ! Tourists flocked into the area like never before, B/B’s full, walkers on the Dingle Way have exceeded all other years in numbers and our Restaurants are packed every evening. Locally Sandy Feet is a new pet farm in Camp and it is flying ! West Kerry Trekking is getting great reviews and the Water Sports in the Maharees and Castlegregory Golf links are very busy and people are out hiking on mount Brandon and Cahrerconree and other hills and mountains in the area too and not to mention the miles and miles of safe sandy beaches we have, never too busy ! There is great music in the bars and we have O Dywers shop in the village, Hair Dresser and petrol station, Launderette, all facilities here in Camp, the gateway to the Dingle Peninsula and all it has to offer ! And we’re on The Wild Atlantic Way !
Not too late to book for September and around Camp Fair falling on Tuesday 18th September, traditional sheep fair one of the last surviving old fairs in the country ! And the fair is getting bigger and better every year !

CASTLE FAIR AND SUMMER FESTIVAL
What a lovely day we all had at Castle Fair on Saturday last. Cows and calves, horses, goats, sheep and fowl of all types, hens ducks geese were all lined up and down the Forge road. John Joe and Jason had their fresh vegetables for sale and a young couple selling duck eggs and hen eggs could hardly keep up with demand. And Denny Cronin took a rest day from “Jaunts with Denny “ around the Maharees, instead he bought his pony to the Fair. Later Denny joined Gerard Mulligan for an mighty openair music session on the street !
Pat O Shea and Sinead Tarrant O Shea presented prizes and trophies to owners of best quality animals as follows –
Best horse – Josh Smith, Best pony – Tim Dennehy, Best pen of lambs – Martin Murphy, Best rare breed – John Pat Long, Best pen of Heifers – Ger O Connor, Champion Ram – Clement Crean. Best pen of bullocks – Maurice Fitzgerald.
One Killiney man said he was was in short trousers at the last fair and he was wearing them again at the fair on Saturday, this time of course he was sporting a modern pair in the style of today ! In many ways the fair was a trip down memory lane for a lot of people ! Castle Fair is a welcome addition to an already very busy and enjoyable annual summer festival in the village of Casle. Long may it continue.
