Camp Notes – January – May 2016

THE DINGLE WAY/KERRY
Fay Brophy tells of her  positive experience on The Dingle Way/Kerry Camino Walk in her article in The Magazine in The Sunday World on Sunday last.
Fay described in detail her welcome in Camp having come through a tough first Day on The Dingle Way Walk. The views across Tralee Bay on the North and Dingle Bay on the South, Fay describes as Breathtaking !  the welcoming lights of The Junction Bar in Camp, the smoking chimney issuing signals of warmth and civilisation. Dinner was one of the best she had in a long time.  Even better the pub was opposite Fay’s accommodation for the night, Camp Junction House Bed and Breakfast.  And Fay had dogs who were warmly welcomed by owner John, who provided an apartment, a most comfortable cosy place to stay for the night.  And the joys and excitement of the walk through Annascaul, Lispole and into Dingle town and around the peninsula is captivated wonderfully in Fay Brophy’s excellent report in the Sunday World.
A great article and great beginning to our new year and a boost for local Tourism in The Dingle Peninsula.

SAVE OUR COASTLINE
A public meeting, attended by numerous invited public representatives and guest speakers, was held at The Club Rooms in Castlegregory on Saturday 6 February. On the agenda was the ongoing problem of coastal erosion in Maharees caused by the wind and high tides. Having studied coastal processes in Maharees for many years, NUIG physical geographer Dr. Eugene Farrell, whose father J.J. hails from Duagh, presented a very informative lecture. His research has found that over the past one hundred and fifteen years the Maharees coastline has receded by 72m at one point. He identified a combination of increased storm surges and human activities such as overgrazing and uncontrolled access to the beaches as the main culprits in recent years and called for a comprehensive management plan to put in place. Apart from a lack of funding, the immediate installation of coastal protection measures in a Special Area of Conservation, such as Magherabeg, is apparently restricted by the need to conduct environmental impact studies.
The meeting was also addressed by Dr. Enda McGovern, Associate Professor in Marketing at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut. He informed the audience that the new challenges presented by global warming will demand solutions that have not been attempted in the past. When the meeting concluded the attendance were little wiser as to what could be done. Was it in the hands of the County Council, the OPW, the National Parks and Wildlife or could local people take their own initiative? Meanwhile, the erosion of the Maharees coastline continues apace.
A further public meeting on coastal erosion will be held at the Club Rooms Castlegregory on Tuesday next 16th February at 8.45pm. All welcome.
Above report from mahareesheritage Facebook page.
