‘West Kerry Mental Health / Cumann Sláinte Intinne Chorca Dhuibhne in association with Mental Health Ireland celebrated the Summer Solstice on World Mental Health Day in the Deseart, Dingle. This is the first year that Mental Health Ireland marked the day across Ireland. The event in Dingle was a low key trial run for future years which proved to be very successful with a good turnout from the community.

Speakers Dr Conor Brosnan GP and Irene Ni Fhlannura Nutritional Therapist, Re Nua talked respectively on depression, its causes and support in the community and nutrition to promote mental health. Musical interludes were provided by local musicians and at the lighting of the celebratory candle,  Monsignor Pádraig ó Fiannachta read a well chosen poem. Cathy Weldon did a reading of one of her poems in English and Irish.  Ilonka, local Yoga teacher brought the festivities to a close as she talked us through a gentle dance to a tune called ‘Willow’ on CD.

The former Annascaul Club Goalie has over the years given sterling service to Camp, Annascaul and West Kerry football. And from across the miles, Kevin who is involved now in training and managing young footballers in Burlingame and San Francisco has not forgotten his roots and in supporting Annascaul GAA Lotto, Kevin epitomises the spirit of the Irish Diaspora away in  far off lands.  Wishing Kevin and his wife Kathleen and his two little boys, Danny and Conor all the best and heartiest congratulations from all of us, maybe, we might see you for the All-Ireland, if not before !!

The Community Alert Public Meeting organised by Camp Community Council on Sunday last was well attended. Gárda Nina Long gave a very informative talk and stressed the need for awareness of cars, vans or other vehicles, many of whom are bogus traders who are coming around rural areas and targeting older people or people living alone. Take car registration number and inform the Gárdaí and they will check them out.  Ask for contact telephone number which can be checked out , you can verify a number yourself by calling 11890.

Gárda Long advised people not to leave valuables in parked cars in car parks adjacent to local beaches.

Motorists speeding on our roads was also cited as a huge danger to road users. Gárda Long would welcome information from the public confidentially or otherwise on any suspicious movements or behaviour in the area. Gárda Long praised highly the local Home Helps who are providing a wonderful service to our elderly. They play a huge role in supporting older people in our communities and for many people they may well be the only carer/visit they have during the week.  Thanks to Gárda Long for her commitment and excellent work with our communities in West Kerry.
