CAMP NOTES – 29TH DECEMBER 2014

DRAMA FUNDRAISER

Camp Drama are presenting “a Wake in the West’ on  Fri 16 th and Sat 17 th January at old school Camp at 8 pm . Proceeds will go to Church of Ireland Camp and St Mary’s Church Camp.Tickets available from O’Dwyers Mace and Mary Moran 0864089504. Tickets will also be available at the door. Last chance to see this hilarious comedy

WEDDING

Congratulations to Breda O Driscoll, Ballygarrett, Camp and Michael Murray, Ballyphehane, Co. Cork on their marriage on 19th December last. Family and friends joined the happy couple in a wonderful celebration in The Park Hotel, Killarney. Go n-eirí an t-ádh libh.

CAMP 2014 – some items in the local news

FEBRUARY

Drama –  Camp Drama Group presented  “A Wake In The West” to packed houses all over West Kerry and on special invitation in England too. The hilariously funny comedy which centres around a wake in West Kerry in 1970’s Ireland is still on tour almost 12 months later. Director – Máire Uí Mhóráin. Cast –  Fergal Crean, Eileen Quirke, Keith O Flaherty, Karen Blennerhassett, Ann Eager, Breda Quirke, Gene Finn, Mike O Neill, Mike Nolan.  Assistant Director – Keith O Flaherty,  Stage construction and design – Padraig O Móráin and Ann Eager, Lighting and sound – Keith O Flaherty and Michéal O Móráin, Front of House – Hazel Evans, Prompter and Tickets – Mary Knightly, Door –  Martin Quirke.

MARCH

Lotto win – There was great excitement in Camp when Andjrianna McCormack, Glandine  won an amazing E133,000 in The RTE winning Streak Show.  And Andjrianna’s  lucky mascot was her husband Joey’s Kerry Minor Football Medal which he won in 1996.

U/21 KERRY MINOR – James Crean did the parish proud when he lined out with the u/21 Kerry Minors against Cork scoring 1 goal and 3 pts on Wednesday 12th March.

APRIL

CAMP COMMUNITY COUNCIL ENVIRONMENT CLEAN-UP – The community came out and did a clean-up  around the area over the Easter Weekend. An overwhelming amount of debris was collected which was removed by Kerry Co. Council bin collection on Tuesday, 22nd April.

MAY

THEATRE PRODUCTION

“After Sarah Miles” by Mike Hilliard Mulcahy was performed by Don Wycherley at the Old School Camp . The Talented,  Mike Hilliard Mulcahy Aughacascla is Writer, Director, Producer  of  “Beyond The Brooklyn Bridge”  which is his debut play and achieved success for him nationwide in Ireland and abroad.

JUNE –

CELEBRATION OF LIGHT – Camp joined with other Kerry communities in hosting the Recovery Haven ‘Celebration of Light’ on Friday 20th June on the beach at Garrahies Gap.

JULY

CAMP INAUGURAL 10 MILE TRAIL RUN – The Camp 10 mile trail run organised by Run The Kingdom Sports and Recreation was a huge success.  Our local Camp participants were off their marks every bit as fast as any of the seasoned competitors. A big turnout of local people helped Tommy Dowling and race organisers steward the event which went off without incident or injury. Next years Camp Trail Run is on  27th June.

CAMP ICA – took on new gardening projects – poly tunnel in Community Sports Field and the Camp Stone in the welcome area at the Junction, not to mention all the other creative and artistic activities they engage in throughout the year and their weekly  Wednesday walk in hail, rain or snow and in sunshine too and taking in the beautiful scenery of Camp and West Kerry areas, uphill and beaches too.

CAMP TOWN TWINNING –  Camp hosted families from the communities of  Glomel and Tazones in July.  It was a most enjoyable week filled with entertainment and fun, culture, music, song and dance.

AUGUST

CAMP CASH COW – Biggest fundraiser of the year for Camp Community Council held in Camp Community Sportsfield on Sunday 3rd. August. Lucky winner of the big prize – Eilish Ashe, Gortbreagogue, Annascaul.

BRENDAN BAWNIE O DRISCOLL SOCCER TOURNAMENT

The Annual Brendan Bawnie O Driscoll Soccer Tournament  in aid of the worthy charity Acquired Brain Injury Ireland was a great success. Camp United won the tournament. Organiser Christopher O Driscoll.

SEPTEMBER

ALL IRELAND GLORY – Kerry won the All-Ireland on the double. And Camp’s own Liam O’Regan, Physio and Sports Masseur was one of the people “behind the Scenes” working and preparing the victorious Kerry Minor Football Team. Liam runs regular clinics in Camp and  in The Skellig Hotel, Dingle.

CAMP JUNCTION ANNUAL VINTAGE DAY – Great day of old farming traditions, this year included turf cutting, A 2015 Calendar chronicles some highlights of the day.  All proceeds to The Irish Kidney Association.

CAMP SHEEP FAIR – A great social event not only for sheepfarmers and friends, but  for everybody in Camp, young and old. Aisling O Donnell, Kilteenbane was the owner of the Prize winning Best Horse on the day, Jack Crean, Knockglossbeg won the most traditional pen category and David Crean, Knockglossbeg owned the prizewinning pen of best quality sheep at the fair.

OCTOBER

NEW SPORTS FACILITY IN CAMP COMMUNITY FIELD – Camp Community Council developed a state of the art  All Weather Astro turf pitch in Camp Community Sports field with financial support from NEKD Leader Development Company and Sport Capital Grant. A Field Development Committee are organising ongoing fundraisers to raise shortfall in funds. Camp Community Council invite any clubs/schools/groups etc. who may be interested in using the facility to forward details by email to the following address. campastropitch@gmail.com.

NOVEMBER

The Redemptorists Fathers, Limerick delivered a Parish Mission to Annascaul/Camp/Inch parishioners.  Fr. John Buckley PP was delighted with the attendance and success of the mission.

DECEMBER

ROWING –  Camp Ladies crew of Eileen Quirke, Ailise Deane and Breda Quirke are winners of this years Coiste Lar na gCurrachai National Curragh racing League. They won 7 out of the 10 races in the League and were also winners of the All-Ireland Curragh racing Championship held in Rosmuc earlier this summer. The overall prize is an all expenses paid trip to Barcelona in March where they will represent Ireland in a Curragh racing competition on Saint Patrick’s weekend.

CHRISTMAS DINNER – Camp Active Retired enjoyed a lovely Christmas dinner in the Old School on 18th December. Lunches and entertainment is provided every other week throughout the year with the help of Community Council CE project, Thomas Ashe, Camp Community Council and Anne Moynihan, HSE, Kerry.

 

ANNUAL REINDEER RUN AND WALK

Camp Community Council were blessed with sunny weather for their Annual Reindeer Run and walk around the scenic Camp area on Saturday 28th December.  All proceeds going to The Sports Field Development fund.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

There were times of joy and times of sadness throughout the past year !  loss of loved ones and  great happiness and joy on the arrival of new life into some of our families,  May 2015 bring peace and joy, health and happiness and many blessings into all of our homes !

OBITUARY

The death has taken place of Tommy Sayers, Derrymore East, Tralee. Tommy was a great GAA man and goalkeeper. He was goalkeeper with that great Camp Team that won 3 finals in a row in 1949,1950 and 1951. Camp and Derrymore amalgamated in 1948 and had a team in the Castlegregory District Board. Of course many more Derrymore players played with Camp but that report is for another day. Tommy’s great friend, colleague and fellow Camp football team player Eoghan O Duibhne ( Eugie Deane) Curra gave a wonderful oration at the graveside when Tommy was laid to rest in Rath Cemetary Tralee on  Thursday 27th November. Tommy is survived by his wife Maureen (nee Murphy)  Daughters,  Gerardine, Jean and Nicola, Son, Aidan, grandchildren Maeve, Michael, Conor, Amy, Jamie, Dylan and Ava, brother John, sister Sr. Philomena, son-in-law, Michael daughter-in-law, Fiona, extended family, relatives and many friends.  Sympathy is extended to all.

The death of Dan Mulcahy, Garrahies, Camp occurred last Friday. Dan is another member of the panel of players of that great Camp Team of 1949, 1950 and 1951. He was a real strong defender and sometimes played in goal.  And Along with playing out the field he was the sub goalkeeper.  Dan was a huge supporter of Kerry football all of his life and Mark Rowlands in his address to the congregation after Mass on Sunday expressed the gratitude and thanks of the family to John Doyle and Bernadette Fitzgerald who brought the Sam Maguire Cup to Dan’s bedside just days before his death which brought him great joy !  There is no doubt that If  there is a football team in that great heavenly Kingdom our two Camp goalkeepers will surely be a part if it !  Eoghan O Duibhne again gave a poignant oration at the graveside in Old Kilgobbin Cemetery on Sunday when Dan was laid to rest alongside his beloved wife Bridget who predeceased him.  The Requiem Mass on Sunday was celebrated by Fr. John Buckley PP and Dan was waked at home in accordance with his wishes surrounded by his family, neighbours and friends.  Ni Bheidh a leithéid aris ann. Dan is survived by his son Patrick, Daughters Kathleen and Mary, Grandchildren Conor, David, Kathleen, Colman and Maria,  Brother Sean, Sisters Breda and Ellie, nieces,nephews, sons in law, Mark and Tommy, extended family, relatives and many friends.  Buíochas le Eoghan O Duibhne as ucht an tuairisc peile  – Thank you Eugie for the football reports.  Sympathy is extended to all.

CAMP YOUTH CLUB

Camp Astro Turf, all weather, floodlit  facility in Camp Community Field is available for use by all age groups and Camp Community Council invite any clubs/schools/groups etc. who are interested in using the facility to forward details by email to the following address.

Camp Christmas Walk.

 The Camp Christmas Walk will be a nine mile walk going through the scenic hills, valleys and beaches of Camp. We will walk up the Bog Road to Maum, down through Gleann na nGealt and then along the beach back to Camp, with a final finish up Camp Height to the Old School. Anyone who doesn’t want to do the full walk is welcome to join in along the way.

Registration on 28th December from 9.45am at the Old School Camp with the walk starting at 10.15 am. €10 per adult and Children free.

 Vintage Car “Reindeer Run”

 Also on Sunday 28th December, the second annual Vintage Car Run around the Dingle peninsula will take place. Registration from 10.45am at the Old School Camp with the motorists setting off at 11.15am.

 There will be refreshments for both groups on their return to the Old School in Camp. Money raised from both events will go towards the Camp Community Sportsfield Development. Both events were very enjoyable last year and it would be great to see both well supported again this time around.

PASSING OF A LEGEND

The news of the death of Jackie Healy Rae former Independent TD for Kerry South on Friday last was received with great sadness. Jackie was a man of the people whose  clinic here in The Railway Tavern in Camp was attended religiously by himself and later by his son and grandson on the third Monday of every month.
