CAMP NOTES – 27TH AUGUST 2012

CAMP CASH COW

Camp Cash Cow went off well on Sunday despite the odd shower of rain !    The cow obliged and did her business around 5.30 p.m. and the lucky lady who pinpointed the spot is Cork woman Fiona Aherne currently holidaying in John O’Shea’s, Shore Acre Caravan Park in Camp.     There was great excitement too at The penalty Shootout and local Dáil Deputies showed that saving goals is no easy task and our local Compere Séan Barry was as good as  Radio Kerry’s Wishey Fogarty any day noting every kick of the ball and every move made !       Jason Higgins, Cork and Stephen Lyons from Limerick won trophies for the highest scores,  well done lads and to the lady organisers Norah Crean and Frances O Connor.    Tommy Finn from Lougher with his Dog Max won a prize too and the relay races organised by Tony Casey were great fun with great participation from  U/4’s to u/8’s boys and girls.     Bonny Babies winners were –   William O shaughnessy U/2 and his sister Mercedes won the U/1 category.     Tickets sales for the Cash Cow event raised E5,360  and between contributions and donations the event has earned Camp Community Council a very healthy E6,000.    All proceeds going towards the Camp Sportsfield Development Fund.  Camp Community Council wishes to thank  all who helped out in any way on the day and those who contributed so generously  and Jack Crean who provided us with the cow again this year  !      Go raibh Míle Míle maith agaibh go léir !

Camp Ladies Crew – Breda Quirke, Eileen Quirke, Ailise Deane and Ann Potter won the Kerry Naomhóg Womens Championship at The Dingle Regatta on Sunday.    Congratulations and well done ladies !

WEDDING BELLS

A love of home and Family bonds brought two lovely young couples back to Camp recently to be married in St. Marys Church in the village.    Liam English, son of Abbey Murphy-English, Kilteenbane, Camp and Eamon of Roscrea, Co. Tipperary and Aisling  Minogue, daughter of Paul and Monica,  Roscrea  celebrated their nuptials on  Friday, 3rd.  August in Camp      Afterwards the wedding party enjoyed a wonderful wedding reception at The Skellig Hotel, Dingle.   

On Saturday, 18th August,  Joe and Pat O Driscoll’s  daughter Katie returned from Connecticut in the USA to marry Gerard Robertson of Connecticut, USA in Camp.    The reception was held in a beautiful state of the art wedding marquee at Fitzgeralds, Junction Bar.      Camp has always been home from home for both families who spend most of their summer holidays here.  Congratulations to Liam and Aisling and to Katie and Gerard, may you all enjoy health and happiness and good luck in the future.

CAMP CHILDCARE CENTRE

New Afterschool Service   

Camp Community Childcare Centre is offering a new exciting revamped Afterschool service for 2012!!

A wide range of afterschool activity programmes for children attending local national schools giving children of all ages the oppurtunity to have fun, socialise, learn new skills & make new friends in a safe, familiar, home away from home environment.

Service includes

Pickup from local national schools,  directly to the centre by a fully licensed mini bus supervised by our staff.     (Aughacasla & Castlegregory, enquiries from Derryquay and others also welcome)

On arrival at the centre, children will be given a healthy, nutritious lunch, prepared on the premises (pre-planned monthly menus are available to view).

Supervised homework time for all children.

Reduced rates for parents in receipt of Social welfare payments, medical card holders or back to work / education programs.   Please speak to centre manager for more details.

OBITUARY

The death has occurred of Thomas Kearns of Shore Acre, Camp and

Formerly of Dublin.  Requiem Mass was celebrated on Wednesday at 11am in St. Mary Church, Camp, followed by burial afterwards in Ballinknockane Cemetery, Camp.

Tom affectionately known locally as “Tom the Dub.”  was a great supporter of local Soccer and was involved in the management and training of Camp United in the past.

Un12 Central League: Annascaul Un12s went down to Mitchells and Gaeltacht in their first two games of the Central League losing out only by a narrow margin. This weeks game versus Ballymac away.

Un13 Annascaul/Lispole: training this Wednesday evening, August 29th, at 6.45pm in Annascaul. After this week training will continue on Friday evenings @ 6pm. West Kerry Un13 Championship will be starting in a few weeks time.

Annascaul Juvenile Badminton:

Registration for Juvenile Badminton will take place in Annascaul Sports Hall on Wednesday 5th September @ 6pm. Children from 3rd class upwards are welcome to enrol. Juvenile Club will be commencing on Friday 7th September @ 3.15pm. All players must be registered by this date. €30 per child. Family concessions.

Annascaul/Camp/Inch Community Games:

Congratulations to Brian Kennedy who won the pewter medal for 4th place in the Un14 Shot Putt at the Community Games National Finals in Athlone IT last weekend with a throw of 12.50m. This was a great result for Brian who was up against strong experienced counties in this field event. Well done to The Un14 Boys Relay Team who qualified from their heat Saturday morning and won a place in the Semi-Finals. In the Semi-finals later that evening  they ran a brillant race,  finishing 5th, just missing out in a place in the final and the last 8. Team – Rian O Sullivan, Joe Hoare, Derry Barrett and Kieran O Connor. Also, well done to Katelyn Reid who performed well throwing over 30metres in the Un12 Girls Ballthrow but was not placed in the medals. This was a big achievement for Annascual/Camp/Inch by the participants as the standard is very high at this level in Community Games. We hope they enjoyed the weekend in Athlone and the occasion. This brings to close Community Games for 2012. Over the past several months our area have competed in Un15 Mixed Badminton,  Un13 Boys/Girls Futsal, Un13 Un13/15 Boys/Girls Indoor Soccer, Un12 Boys Outdoor Soccer, Un12 Chess, Un11 Mixed Tag Rugby, Un8/Un16  Boys/Girls Art, Un10 Boys/Girls Handwritting and finally Athletics – winning County medals and certs in most of these events, competed in Munsters Finals and  Nathional Finals.  Well done to all the boys and girls who put in a big effort and took part in the games.   Thanks to their parents for their support and to the volunteers who helped us out with training.     Area Committee:  Bride Kennedy, Mary Falvey, Patricia Moriarty and Joe Reid.     We extend our sympathy to Joe and his family on the recent death of his mother Catherine Reid, Kildare.

CAMP NOTES – 13th August 2012

CAMP CASH COW

Camp Community Council are organising a novel and exciting  Annual event on next  Sunday, 19th. August in Camp Community Sports Field  from 2.00 to 6.00 p.m.     Camp Cash Cow is a Family Day and one of the big events happening on the Day is “The Cash Cow”    –   A cow will be let loose in a confined area in the field,  divided into grids and people are invited to buy tickets at E10 each and whoever  pinpoints the spot where she does her business,  will win E500.      And its all in a very good cause,  all funds raised going towards the Camp Sportsfield Development.        There will plenty of other  activities  to suit  all the family,   face painting, bouncy castle,  sports relay racing and a Penalty Shoot out with local politicians in Goal and a barbeque and Fancy dress for the children,  all happening  Sunday next in Camp

So please support Camp Cash Cow.   Tickets are available from members of the Council and at local business outlets.

VW EIRBALL RUN

The 7th Annual Eireball Run takes place from 11th to 19th August, 2012,  taking in The Railway Tavern Camp on Thursday night 16th. August where there will be plenty of entertainment and craic ! 

This year marks the seventh year for Eireball  and the route winds its way anti-clockwise around starting in Arklow and ending in Kilmaganny.

The iconic  VW Bus is the vehicle of choice of most  participants  but  Beetles and  Karmann Ghias also take part.    The quirky classics from the Republic of Ireland,  Northern Ireland and further afield, crammed with children, dogs and surfboards, dedicate a week of their summer to the Eireball charities.

To date over €50,000 euro has been raised by the  Eireball Run and 100% of the proceeds are donated to the Eireball charities.    This year all funds will be shared between  MS Ireland  and  The Samaritans.

Organiser Louisa O’Callaghan is filming  a documentary of the event  this year which will be premiered at the Annual  Railway Tavern, Camp, Co. Kerry  gathering on  26Th &, 27Th October.

ICA AND FRIENDS

Camp ICA joined with ladies from Causeway and Castleisland guilds in a 3 day outing to An Grianán last week.    They visited the Titanic Museum in Belfast and Moneygall the ancestral home of United States President Barack Obama as well as taking in some shopping and sightseeing as well.   They had a wonderful time !    Well done to Camp ICA Secretary Mary Knightly local organiser.

CASTLE PATTERN

Castlegregory  Pattern  falling annually on 15th August has now been extended to a 3 day event and the hard working local Community Council have a huge programme of activties and entertainment happening day and night suitable for all the family.  The Mutton Pie is of course part of it and can be savoured in local pubs and restaurants but above all, the pattern is a time to catch up with old friends and relatives who come home year after year for the pattern.

RED CROSS YOUTHS

The Red Cross youths in Tralee are hosting a FREE afternoon information session for older people in the Imperial Hotel, Denny St, Tralee from  2.30pm until 5.00pm on Thursday August 23rd. This is to celebrate the European Union year of “Solidarity between generations”.    Speakers from the Red Cross, an Gardai Siochana, Citizens information service, St Vincent De Paul and others will be at this event. Information packs will be available at the door and there is tea /coffee available as well.  This event has been kindly sponsored by the Imperial Hotel, Tralee.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

Amelia Day,  Kilteenbane was pleasantly surprised when she arrived for her usual cup of tea at O Dwyers Retail Centre, Camp  after Church on Sunday last.   A beautiful birthday cake adorned with candles awaited her to mark a special birthday for Amelia !    Amelia’s ICA friends joined her in the celebration !   Congratulations Amelia !

 TRACING YOUR ANCESTRY

John O Sullivan’s recent letter to “The Kerryman”  looking for information  on his great grandfather Jim O Sullivan, who left Ballinknockane, Camp in the last century to make his fortune in Wales has bore  fruit !       John met up with local people and historians who traced  his ancestral home and pinpointed  the place  where the O Sullivan family lived in Camp.       John  went home happy and says he will be back to Camp next year !     He  wants to thank all the Camp people who met him and helped him piece his O Sullivan ancestry together.       He says he will be back next year !   

WEDDING

The marriage of Patricia Scanlon,  Daughter of  Patrick and Collette , Cappaclough, Camp and  Shane Marmion,  son of Danny and Vera, Dundalk  took place on  Friday, 27th July at St. Marys Church, Camp.    Fr. John Buckley PP,  Annascaul  officiated at the ceremony assisted by Fr. John Carroll.    Congratulations to Patricia and Shane and may you enjoy a long and happy life together !

CROKE PARK:       Annascaul U/12  played in Croke Park on Tuesday  August 7th.   A wonderful experience for these promising young footballers,     hopefully  the first of many !      Among them was  Jack Farrell,  Ballinknockane,  Camp  son of the prolific  Annascaul Club player,  Genie  Farrell and  of the O Driscoll Farrell family,   a  West Kerry Football Dynasty in our time.      Well done to all !
