CAMP NOTES – 1ST JUNE 2015

COMMUNITY ALERT

The Community Alert Public Meeting organised by Camp Community Council on Sunday last was well attended. Gárda Nina Long gave a very informative talk and stressed the need for awareness of cars, vans or other vehicles, many of whom are bogus traders who are coming around rural areas and targeting older people or people living alone. Take car registration number and inform the Gárdaí and they will check them out.  Ask for contact telephone number which can be checked out , you can verify a number yourself by calling 11890.

Gárda Long advised people not to leave valuables in parked cars in car parks adjacent to local beaches.

Motorists speeding on our roads was also cited as a huge danger to road users. Gárda Long would welcome information from the public confidentially or otherwise on any suspicious movements or behaviour in the area. Gárda Long praised highly the local Home Helps who are providing a wonderful service to our elderly. They play a huge role in supporting older people in our communities and for many people they may well be the only carer/visit they have during the week.  Thanks to Gárda Long for her commitment and excellent work with our communities in West Kerry.

Gene came to Camp in 1982 on retirement. An English teacher for all of his working life, Gene loved literature and books. CAMP NOTES – 8TH DEC. 2014

OBITUARY

The death has taken place of Tommy Sayers, Derrymore East, Tralee. Tommy was a great GAA man and goalkeeper. He was goalkeeper with that great Camp Team that won 3 finals in a row in 1949,1950 and 1951. Camp and Derrymore amalgamated in 1948 and had a team in the Castlegregory District Board. Of course many more Derrymore players played with Camp but that report is for another day. Tommy’s great friend, colleague and fellow Camp football team player Eoghan O Duibhne ( Eugie Deane) Curra gave a wonderful oration at the graveside when Tommy was laid to rest in Rath Cemetary Tralee on  Thursday 27th November. Tommy is survived by his wife Maureen (nee Murphy)  Daughters,  Gerardine, Jean and Nicola, Son, Aidan, grandchildren Maeve, Michael, Conor, Amy, Jamie, Dylan and Ava, brother John, sister Sr. Philomena, son-in-law, Michael daughter-in-law, Fiona, extended family, relatives and many friends.  Sympathy is extended to all.

The death of Dan Mulcahy, Garrahies, Camp occurred last Friday. Dan is another member of the panel of players of that great Camp Team of 1949, 1950 and 1951. He was a real strong defender and sometimes played in goal.  And Along with playing out the field he was the sub goalkeeper.  Dan was a huge supporter of Kerry football all of his life and Mark Rowlands in his address to the congregation after Mass on Sunday expressed the gratitude and thanks of the family to John Doyle and Bernadette Fitzgerald who brought the Sam Maguire Cup to Dan’s bedside just days before his death which brought him great joy !  There is no doubt that If  there is a football team in that great heavenly Kingdom our two Camp goalkeepers will surely be a part if it !  Eoghan O Duibhne again gave a poignant oration at the graveside in Old Kilgobbin Cemetery on Sunday when Dan was laid to rest alongside his beloved wife Bridget who predeceased him.  The Requiem Mass on Sunday was celebrated by Fr. John Buckley PP and Dan was waked at home in accordance with his wishes surrounded by his family, neighbours and friends.  Ni Bheidh a leithéid aris ann. Dan is survived by his son Patrick, Daughters Kathleen and Mary, Grandchildren Conor, David, Kathleen, Colman and Maria,  Brother Sean, Sisters Breda and Ellie, nieces, nephews, sons in law, Mark and Tommy, extended family, relatives and many friends.  Buíochas le Eoghan O Duibhne as ucht an tuairisc peile  – Thank you Eugie for the football reports.  Sympathy is extended to all.

GAA – Annascaul V Lispole Match Report:

It was tit for tat in the opening period with points from Shane Foley, Jason Hickson and Emmet Kennedy leaving the sides level at the quarter mark with four points apiece. In the 16th minute Tommy Pierce denied Lispole a goal and both sides shared points again before a long ball in by James Scanlon; broken by Shane Foley, saw Aidan Crean finish to the back of the net. This goal separated the sides at the half way mark. Annascaul 1-06 to Lispole 0-06

It took Annascaul 17 minutes to put a score on the board in the second half leaving Lispole dominate in the opening period resulting in Lispole clawing back into the game going a point up at the outset of the final quarter. Annascaul came back into the game at this stage with points from James Crean and Jason Hickson which were answered by a hungry Lispole seeing them two points up with five minutes to go. Annascaul didn’t give up with a point from Jason Hickson in the 26th minute and a pressurised free kick seeing the sides level at the blow of the final whistle. Both sides in this local derby ended with fourteen men apiece and will be equally glad to have come away with a share of the spoils.

GAA – Annascaul V Keel Match Report

Jason Hickson opened the scoring for Annascaul with a point from a free in the opening minute, Aaron Murphy quickly replied with a pointed free for the visitors. Keel were then denied two goal chances but Thomas Ladden eventually converted a point on the rebound of a Tommy Pierce save. Gary Sayers and James Long slotted three more points inside the opening quarter for Keel while Annascaul will rue four missed opportunities before Jason Hickson struck the ball to the back of the Keel net, Keel now one point up at the quarter mark.

A low scoring second quarter saw Keel and Annascaul add two further points each to their tally leaving the half time score Annascaul 1-3 to Keels 0-07.

Annascaul were unlucky not to go two points up at the start of the second half with a missed opportunity on goal. Keel added to their lead with points from Aaron Murphy, Jason Foley and Gavin Evans but Annascaul’s Emmet Kennedy and Aidan Crean kept the home side within two points of the visitors at the three quarter mark.

It wasn’t until the twenty eight minute again that the scoreboard got further use, with Jason Hickson pointing from a free to put one point between the sides in the dying minutes, what ensued was to be a thriller of a finale. Annascaul would have thought prematurely that they had a share of the spoils when Shane Foley pointed straight after to level the sides just inside full time. Keel were looking for the win though, and on the next kick out James Nagle received a ball that saw him score for the visitors. Was it to be Keels day? Not if Jason Hickson had anything to do with it, pointing from a free in the next run of play seeing the sides level at the final whistle Annascaul 1-08 Keel 0-11.

The man of the match title for both teams in this local derby was sponsored by Sammy’s Restaurant Inch, the prize being dinner for two in Sammy’s to each teams Man of the match, Annascaul’s Jason Hickson and Keel’s James Long being the lucky recipients.

A big turnout of local people helped Tommy Dowling and race organisers steward the event which went off without incident or injury. LISPOLE LAMB CO-OP CELEBRATE 40 YEARS

Comharchumann  Uan Chiarrai was founded in 1974 by a group of local farmers who saw the need for a lamb fattening station in the peninsula. From small acorns great oak trees grow and the co-op was soon to evolve and become a thriving business,  which today is one of the biggest wool co-op’s in the county and provider of  farm products to farmers. To celebrate the success of 40 years, the Comharchumann had an open day on Thursday last which was hugely attended and was a great success. The original committee of James Brosnan, Cathaoirleach, Michéal O Mórain, Rúnaí, Pat Quirke, Derrymore, Robert Blennerhassett, Camp and Thomas O Sullivan, Baile an Asaigh are still on the coiste today, along with Co-op Manager Sean Moriarty, who was there on Thursday doing business as usual with special reductions to mark the occasion.

The day concluded with with the celebration of Mass followed by refreshments.  We hope that this wonderful community initiative, the epitome of what “Europe”   today  calls  “the bottom up” approach blossoms and develops into the next century. Go n-eirí an sláinte Libh go léir !!

CAMP HERITAGE SOCIETY

Down through the years Camp people at home and all over the world have shown a huge interest in the local history and heritage of the area in all its facets, physical, social, culture and rich archaeological features.   Of course Camp archaeological sites and other memorabilia are documented,  however there is also more information out there yet undocumented.  And so it is timely that we should set up a group, The Camp Heritage Society to work on ducumenting the local lore,  some of which is not in book or paper, and leave something that future Camp young people will have into the next century. Time passes quickly and with it too go, the memories, stories and knowledge, so please join us if you have any interest in this subject !  Many hands make light work !

A meeting will be held in early September to formally set up The Camp Heritage Society.  If you have an interest or have any ideas  –   Contact person(s)  Brigid O Connor – 087 2359304,  Martin Quirke – 087 9865964.

MARATHON ACHIEVEMENT

What a “homecoming” for Shane Finn on Saturday on the last run of his 12 day 12 Marathons which commenced in Dublin and finished in Dingle on Saturday. This amazing young man who took on the challenge in aid of Spina Bifida,Hydrocephalus Ireland, a cause close to his heart as his cousin Mary suffers from the condition ran up the steep incline at Gleann na nGealt,  like it was a casual jog.  People awaited at every village and cross roads in West Kerry to Cheer Shane on and even ran alongside him on his epic journey,  as he clocked up the 12 days,  flanked by his Dad Timmy cycling at his side.  On the last lap heading into Dingle, Shane was accompanied by a lone runner Mark Evans his business partner at WK Fitness Gym.  They arrived to tumultuous applause from the waiting crowds which were in the hundreds outside WK fitness Gym. Comhghairdeachas Shane and well done, you have surely sprinted into the World records for this wonderful achievement !!!

OBITUARY

The death of George McClelland, Killelton, Camp, Dublin and The Isle of Man occurred last week. George was a larger than life character, whose entrepreneurial spirit was to take him to many parts of the world promoting Irish Art,  a hobby which he turned into a business in the early years of his life when he began collecting antiques for his shop,  which he opened in Belfast in the early 1960’s. George’s late wife Maura Scannell a native of Annascaul, who predeceased him 7 years ago was to bring him to the Kingdom and their home in Killelton, Camp was where Maura and George entertained their many many friends down through the years.  His daughter Cathy’s address to the congregation at St. Marys Church Camp was poignant and there were tearful moments in the church as she recalled George and Maura’s life and the love which they had for Camp and its people. In 1978 George presented an artist’s  icon of The Madonna and Child to St. Marys Church, Camp, a beautiful piece from his own personal art collection.  Fr. Joseph Geoff who assisted with Fr. John Buckley PP in the concelebration of the requiem Mass on Friday paid tribute to George, his best friend at The Nursing Home they shared over the past months. George was laid to rest in Camp Cemetary alongside his beloved wife Maura. Go ndéana Dia trocaire ar a anam. He is survived by his daughters, Anne, Cathy and Kerry, son George, grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, extended family, relatives and many friends to whom sympathy is extended.

GAA

Annascaul v Dromid Match Report
Annascaul were away to Dromid Pearses recently and added two more points to their tally in the league table with a four point win.
Aidan Crean opened the scoring for Annascaul with a point in the opening minute. Annascaul dominated the first half and would have been disappointed not to have a greater lead at the half way mark with three attempts on goal saved by the Dromid keeper. However two points from Jason Hickson, a point from Emmet Kennedy and three points from James Crean saw Annascaul leading by five at half time, Annascaul 0-07 Dromid 0-02.
Points at the start of the second half from James Scanlon and James Crean were cancelled out by a goal for Dromid in the fifth minute which was replied by a pointed free from Jason Hickson. Dromid took over for the next ten minutes out scoring Anascaul by 1 goal and 3 points to a Jason Hickson free leaving the sides level with ten minutes to go. Anascaul showed character with 5 of the next 6 points being theirs through Emmet Kennedy, Eamonn Hickson, corner back David Clifford, Shane Foley and James Crean. Shane Foley secured the victory with a punched effort as time drew to a close. Full time score was Anascaul 17 points to Dromid 2-7.
Best for Anascaul were Eoin Curry on his first start for his team, James Farrell, Ger Farrelly, James Crean and Eamonn Hickson with the Man of the Match going to David Clifford.
Team – Tommy Pierce, Andrew Finn, Gearoid O’ Shea, Eoin Curry, Ger Farelly, Eamonn Hickson (0-01), Eoin O’ Neill, Emmet Kennedy (0-02), Jason Hickson (0-04,3f) Fionn Coakley, James Farrell, David Clifford (0-01), Aidan Crean (0-01), James Crean (0-05), Shane Foley (0-02). GAA

Annascaul defeated Ardfert in great sporting conditions at home last Sunday on a score-line of 0-16 to 2-09.

The scoring opened with a point from Ardfert’s Cian Hussey in the first minute of the game, followed with a free from Annascaul’s James Crean. Further points were exchanged from Ardfert’s John Galvin and Annascaul’s Jason Hickson, and a superb save from the home side goalie Tommy Pierce left the sides level at the end of the first quarter mark.

Annascaul’s James Crean pointed from a free in the sixteenth minute before Ardfert’s Cian Hussey gave the away side a two point lead from a goal. Annascaul dominated the remainder of the quarter with points from Aidan Crean, Fionn Coakley, James Crean, Emmet Kennedy and Jason Hickson. During the two minutes of injury time Ardfert’s Cian Hussey and Darren Wallace narrowed the margin to leave the half- time score of Annascaul 0-8 to Ardfert’s 1-04.

An exciting entrance to the second half ensued with a penalty awarded to Ardfert in the opening minutes converted by Michael Moloney to put another goal on the board. Brandon Barrett quickly followed with a point for Ardfert before a change was forced when Ardfert’s Michael Moloney was black carded and replaced by Brian Moloney. A spell of points from Annascaul’s Emmet Kennedy, Jason Hickson, James Crean and Eamonn Hickson left Annascaul two ahead at the start of the final quarter.

A free for both sides saw John Galvin and Jason Hickson slotting over, before a shrewd pass from Annascaul’s James Farrell to James Crean saw the ball over the bar. With five minutes to go and three points up Annascaul would have thought they were home and dry but a hungry Ardfert looking for a share of the spoils slotted over three points to level the game at the final stages. However, a Jason Hickson free insured Annascaul’s victory on the day with the full time sore of Annascaul 0-16 to Ardfert’s 2-09.

Annascaul Senior Football Team:

Annascaul qualified recently for a semi-final position in the West Kerry League and Annascaul were also successful away to Lispole on a score line of 0-12 to 0-9.

The game opened with a point from Jason Hickson in the first minute of the game. Lispole answered in the tenth minute, but with points from Eamonn Hickson and Shane Foley, Lispole were trailing at the half-time stage on a score line of 0-5 to 0-3.Jason Hickson once again opened for Annascaul in the fifth minute of the second half, with James Scanlon pointing, and a burst from Shane Foley adding two consecutive points giving Annascaul a six point lead in the opening stages. However, that was short lived with a hungry Lispole adding five unanswered points to the score board coming within one point of Annascaul. With Lispole on their tails, Annascaul’s upped the work rate with John Bowler, David Clifford and young Alan Falvey slotting over in the final stages of the game leaving them victorious. Best for Annascaul were Eamonn Hickson, Shane Foley, James Scanlon, Jason Hickson and man-of-the-match Emmet Kennedy. The West Kerry League semi-final matches are scheduled for next weekend, times and venues to be announced.Tommy Pierce,

Donal O’Connor, Gearoid O Shea, Andrew Finn,

Daniel O Connell, Eamonn Hickson (0-1), Keith Moynihan,

James Scanlon (0-1), Emmet Kennedy,

Ger Farrelly, Shane Foley (0-3), John Bowler (0-1),

Jason Hickson (0-4,1f), Jamie Finn, Shane Scanlon.

SUBS: David Clifford (0-1), Eoin O’Neill, Paul Whelehan, James Sayers, and Alan Falvey (0-1) and Stephen Pierce.

Best of luck to James Crean who will be lining out for Kerry’s U21’s this Wednesday night against Cork, in the Austin Stacks Park Tralee at 7.30pm.

Thank you to all who supported the Annascaul-Camp-Inch Coiste Na nÓg’s fundraising quiz in Hannafin’s bar, Annascaul recently and to those who purchased the Croke Park tickets, where all proceedings went directly to the club.

Annascaul U14 Team:

The Annascaul U14 team were beaten in round 2 by a far stronger Dingle side recently away to Dingle. In round 3.

Annascaul lost out last weekend in the West Kerry League Semi-Final to Dingle in Pairc an Aghasaigh on a score line of 1-13 to 0-7.

Dingle opened the scoring with a point from Mark Evans in the first minute of the game, shortly followed by a point from Annascauls Jason Hickson. It was tit-for-tat in the opening quarter between Jason Hickson and Mark Evans until Dingles Breandán Kelliher shot to the back of the net which saw Dingle a goal up at the end of the first quarter. However, points from James Crean and Jason Hickson narrowed the gap with a half time score of Dingle 1-03 to Annascaul 0-5.

Annascaul added to the score board with a point from James Crean in the first minute of the second half but unfortunately for Annascaul they were unable to respond to a spree of points from Mikey Geaney and Mark Evans. Jason Hickson scored a point from play in the closing minutes but this was far from enough to fend off a stronger performance by Dingle in the second half.

Best for Annascaul were Emmet Kenney, Shane Foley, David Clifford, Eoin O’Neill and Annascauls man-of-the-match Jason Hickson.

TEAM: Tommy Pierce,

Andrew Finn, Gearoid O Shea, Eoghan O’ Neill, Daniel O Connell, Eamonn Hickson, Keith Moynihan, James Scanlon, Emmet Kennedy,  David Clifford, Shane Foley, Ger Farelly, James Crean (0-2, 1f), Jason Hickson (0-5, 4f,), Johnny Deane. Subs Used: Fionn Coakley for Andrew Finn and John Bowler for Ger Farrelly. Subs: Donal O’ Connor, Paul Whelehan, Frances Herlihy, Jamie Finn, Stephen Pierce, Shane Scanlon and Jamie Quirke.

Annascaul are away to Scartaglin this coming weekend in Round 1 of the Credit Union County Senior Fooball League, time and date to be confirmed. Well done to James Crean on his performance with the Kerry U21’s last Wednesday night, unfortunately Kerry were unsuccessful losing out to Cork on a scoreline of Cork 0-18 to Kerry 2-08.

CAMP NOTES – 18TH FEBRUARY 2014

HURRICANE DARWIN

Hurricane Darwin wreaked havoc on the Dingle Peninsula turning huge lorries upside down and bringing big trees down like matchsticks. One lorry driver had a very narrow escape when his lorry was caught be a severe gale at the top of Skirlough overlooking the valley of Gleann na nGealt here in Camp. Local lore tells the Dingle Train being blown off the railway track on a November morning in 1911 at almost exactly the same spot. Shortly afterwards a dry stone wall was built on the lower side of the track to prevent such an occurrence again. Thankfully the truck driver in this instance is safe and well and lives to tell the tale, Thank God. The O Dwyer brothers local contractors came to the rescue very quickly and with the aid of 2 Hymacs had the lorry up on its wheels in no time.  Amazingly the lorry drove away following the incident, but serious damage has been done to the cab and may well be a right off in the future. And we were all devastated to hear  that our local  Free Range Eggs hatchery in Lispoil also fell victim to the storm, wonderful products always fresh and wholesome, we hope it will be up and running again as soon as possible and that there is help and assistance out there to combat such a huge loss to the O Mainin family.

On Thursday night the electricity failed in the area with an outage affecting over 4,000 homes.  The hardworking ESB crews had it back on by lunchtime on Friday.  Great credit and gratitude is due to the ESB, Telecom and Kerry Co. Council workers who were out in all weathers trying to keep services going for the communities all over the country. Sadly one man lost his life working in West Cork. Fr. John Buckley PP included him in the prayers at Masses in our parish on Sunday. God rest His Soul.

ANNASCAUL SENIOR FOOTBALL

The Annascaul senior football team have one win from two games in the West Kerry league, after losing to An Ghaeltacht at Paddy Kennedy memorial park over the weekend on a score line of 2-13 to 0-17. Unfortunately, they were unable to build on their win over Dingle in the earlier round. Aidan Crean gave them the perfect start with three points in the opening seven minutes. However, An Ghaeltacht responded immediately with three unanswered points of their own. Annascaul conceded a goal in the 15th minute and were down by four, until Daniel O’Connell, Shane Foley, Jason Hickson and Emmet Kennedy dragged them back into the game with four points before halftime. The halftime score was Annascaul 0-10, An Ghaeltacht 1-7.

The home side started the second half in great form, with Shane Foley slotting over after a great run. But what Annascaul could do, An Ghaeltacht did better, as a flurry of scores put them four points ahead at the three-quarter mark.

Annascaul looked to the bench in the closing minutes in an effort to level the match, but it was to no avail, and An Ghaeltacht ran out winners by two points. Best for Annascaul were Shane Foley, Emmet Kennedy, Daniel O’Connell, Fionn Coakley and man-of-the-match was Jason Hickson. THE NIGHT OF THE BIG WIND

A Hurricane swept over Ireland on 6th January 1839 killing several hundred people and causing severe damage. This event became part of Irish folklore, in fact  its effect on the 8 million inhabitants of Ireland at the time resulted in it becoming the date from which many other events were measured. When the British state pension system was introduced in 1909, one of the questions asked of those applicants in Ireland who lacked documentation was whether they could remember the storm of 1839. According to stories told locally the last big wind here was in 1936 when local farmers described “haysheds” blown like  “leaves of a book” up to the top of  Carrig and in Knockglossmore a farmers turf shed ended up down in the strand, a line of trees were knocked in Driscolls wood.  All the local people had firewood for the rest of the winter. The storms of the past week did not cause any serious damage.
